You actually said you don't care about Europeans loosing their jobs. And you can feel like that, I don't get offended by it, I just think you underestimate how problems in one economy are going to affect another economy. We have seen different examples in history, protectionism is a short term solution, and eventually it's an all losers game.

What China has been doing is dumping, and yes that's something that is considered illegal in the trade world , and needs to end. But this tarrifs ( if the EU isn't excluded ) are gonna cause more damage, people will loose their jobs as a result.

I said I don't care because I come from a area of the South that has always been known for textiles and furniture, my x-wife is actually from the town where Thomasville furniture got started.... So I have seen first hand how people that used to have jobs doing textile work or working in a furniture plant lost their jobs because the plants closed and the jobs got sent overseas. Did anybody else in the world cry or politicians say "What about our workers?" no they did not do that all. All we were told is that is the way the world works so go find a job paying half as much with less benefits, all the while fighting the other 500 people that got laid off to. So I do have empathy for people in a foreign country losing their job because of what is going on but I am not sorry for us wanting to protect our people.

I am not under estimating how the world economies are linked at all, in fact I have had to school other people that did not know how entwined we are. I am not some simpleton by any stretch of the imagination, I follow current events and business news, I have subscriptions to WSJ and the FT that I read religiously. So I am not dumb to that fact that yes it will have repercussions and ramifications and like I said early on here I would like to see how everything plays out. But for once I am glad that we have someone looking out for the workers here in America and not trying to raise the GDP for workers in Indonesia.

It is illegal what China is doing, and in actuality a majority of China's business practices are illegal. I have read a couple books in that particular subject of dumping and stealing of intellectual property, both of which China does on the regular.

The EU isn't on the list because its not the biggest importer, but it does import steel to the US.

Isn't it ironic that the tariffs are going to hit the ones that import less, but that the biggest importers are exempt?

I'm sure it has to do with NAFTA, so im very curious what Trump is going to do...after all he promised that he will change the deals with NAFTA or he will leave the trade bloc.

Like I said before on here I am waiting to see how everything plays or shakes out so to speak. I would also like to see NAFTA revised alittle bit as well. So we shall see.

Yes... very interesting. And while that only shows some of those on the list, China only ranks about 15th.

Quote

The top source of American steel imports is Canada, not China, accounting for nearly 16% of all imports between January and September last year. In fact, China ranks 15th on that list and saw a 5% decline in the volume of exports to the U.S. compared to the same period a year before. An important caveat, however, is that U.S. steel makers filed a complaint against Chinese-originated steel imports from Vietnam last December and the Department of Commerce announced its intention to impose heavy anti-dumping duties on those products.

India (144%) and Russia (128%) were the fastest-growing exporters for steel to the U.S. in terms of value for the first nine months of last year.

That is not to say China doesn't produce a butt-ton of steel globally. It's just not given to us. This graph in 2016 showed that it was the EU being the biggest provider.

Tariffs are a double edged sword and worse than that, it's a double edged sword held by tiny hands. It's a dangerous game to play.
