 Caladan wins the geek award today

So glad I have no idea what any of that means.

I do, but I will stay quiet so I don't get the second prize on the geek award...

"A vorpal weapon is one which will behead foes on a dice roll of a natural 20."

that's the one i'm familiar with :innocent:

Haha, I didn't know that. I expect they took the name from Jabberwocky, since the hero beheads the Jabberwock in the poem.

I can neither confirm nor deny that I knew that already.

I absolutely agree that US immigration law is a minefield. Unfortunately, we found that out the hard way!

I can't help compare our situation to that of an American entering the UK. In the UK the age of the "child" is frozen at the time of application, which makes perfect sense. But, Nooooooooo, not in the USA! They calculate whether a "child" is eligible for a benefit when the Immigration Office get round to adjudicating that "child's" application! In our case the "child" had become an "adult" and he is then told to get out of the country!! Makes no sense at all.

I agree. Just think how much simpler the whole process would be if the age was frozen. Or if they could approve applications as quickly as the UK can!

Anyway, if a foreign national wants to marry whilst in the UK they need to get a “Certificate of Approval” which will only be granted if they have legal status of over 6 months. If coming from overseas for the purpose of marriage then either a fiancé(e) or marriage visa is required. A foreign national can no longer simply enter the UK and decide to get married whilst on the visit without first obtaining a visa from overseas. Makes perfect sense to me!

On that we are in 100% agreement! That is precisely what I had to do to marry my husband, i.e. get a fiancee visa from a UK embassy in the United States before traveling to the UK. Getting it was easy. Entering the country was easy. Getting married was easy. Hell, immigrating to the UK was easy. In fact I had to provide more pieces of identification to put my house on the market with a British estate agent than I did to immigrate to this country. I think the UK should tighten up on some things, i.e. require medicals to try to cut down on the TB outbreaks and screen applicants for HIV and hepatitis. Not perfect, but certainly a million percent easier and less stressful. Credit where it's due!

I agree, my husband went through the same process as Homesick American when he came to the UK. Its very easy to emigrate to the UK its just kinda scary how easy, and then you think about the kinds of people that can emigrate just so easy.

Maybe the US and the UK can confer, make the UK at little tougher and the US a little easier. I remember the first time I printed all the documents to emigrate to the US I was mesmorized.

And it would have been denied. Durrrrrrr. If he's Mexican, he's probably an EWI....

HUGE generalization. My fiance came on a valid, legal visa. Being Mexican doesn't = no visa. Tourist visas and work visas are available to Mexicans.

and they usually find it kind of tough to get waivers. It's not impossible, but it's damn sure not as easy as you're trying to make it sound

No it's not easy or fast but since Mexico has a 94% approval rate on waivers, your statement is completely false.

And you should at least recognize that there ARE extenuating circumstances. Obviously you don't care about the reasons for EWIs but certainly you can understand that people overstay visas for all kinds of valid reasons.

I used to work for the Geek Squad. They are only trained at what was taught. Now I'm an Engineer, and looking back at that job I see them as incompetent fools.

You were trained in what wasn't taught? How did that work?

Maybe I wasn't clear. They were taught what was only necessary by Best Buy. Miscellaneous bit code diagnostic, etc...they have no clue. For example, in Windows you can enter the debug terminal that list error codes when there's a problem. They weren't taught that. If something cannot be fixed by them through standard method set forth by Best Buy, it's sent to a service center in Chicago.

Anyway, most problems that come into the store is really more user error than with the computer itself.

Are you really surprised, consolemaster, that a service staffed by high school boys with a decent command of computer knowledge isn't at the cutting edge of engineering technology?

I'm sort of imagining you thinking you were part of an elite haxx0r force and slowly realizing that all you were was a glorified help desk.
