I don't know how they know, but the county knows I have a joint sponsor for my wife.  They told me the combined income of me and my brother will be used for income eligibility for Medicaid.  I am waiting for a job offer so I might not need the Medicaid.  If I don't get the job then I will talk to them again and will update it here.  We are currently living in Colorado.

Are you listed as a dependent on his taxes or something?

Hey everybody,

I just want to give an update on our situation.  Looks like the county wanted more information on my brother's financial situations.

They asked for him and his wife's DOB and a copy of the checking account statement.  But more specifically, they wanted to know how much income they make.

I am guessing they are basing my wife's health insurance on their combined income and this has nothing to do with her Greencard status.

I am not sure if you guys get an email notice if I write it here or if I need to reply to everyone for the notice.

Thanks.

It still makes absolutely no sense.  Have you asked them why?

I didn't really get a straight answer but she said she cannot continue the process without his pay stub or something similar that shows his income.

Did you not have the same issue when you apply for health insurance under a joint sponsorship?

I used to process Medicaid and tax credit applications and this also makes no sense to me. Do you and your wife live with your brother? That's the only circumstance I can think of where they'd need his income information (i.e. if you all are in the same household).

Let me also say that sometimes the people processing these applications have no idea what they are doing, and so I would recommend talking to them directly and asking them to explain it. It wouldn't hurt to be armed with some of your own research on the requirements before you talk to them so you can push back if needed.

We are currently living in Colorado and they live in NY.  Yes, I will ask them about it.  Thanks.

Would it be okay if she receives a tax credit for health insurance?  I can forgo Medicaid or assisted health insurance.

Yes, there are several ways she can receive assistance. Here is some information relevant to your state that may help: http://cchn.org/ckf/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/Immigrants-and-the-ACA-Factsheet2.pdf

If you meet the other eligibility requirements, then there shouldn't be any issue with you getting Medicaid. As others have stated, many people do this.  Good luck!

Absolutely not. My joint sponsor is in the top 1 or 2% of incomes, so that wouldn't fly at all.   Didn't even matter when we lived in the same house. Only thing that matters is the immediate income of the nuclear family unit.

Government workers can can be silly at times, which is why I'd push to see the written policy. *

*Reminds me of my favorite story from near me - I went in to get my son's United States passport application done at the county clerk. He was born in Minnesota and I am a USC and the lady tells me that my kid can't have a passport because he isn't a citizen on account of having a foreign born father.  😂
