The Iowa Senate gave final passage Monday to a controversial bill requiring Iowa grocers in a supplemental food program to offer conventional eggs if they sell eggs from chickens housed in a cage-free, free-range or enriched colony cage environment.

House File 2408 was approved 32-17, sending it to Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds for her consideration. It was approved in the House last week on an 81-17 vote.

Sen. Herman Quirmbach, D-Ames, opposed the bill, complaining that it's clearly contrary to free enterprise, anti-regulation policies espoused by Republicans. "This is really direct interference in the marketplace," he said.

On the face of it, since I don't know the context, it sounds like this is government overreach and against free-market principles. A grocer should be able to sell whatever products they wish to, without being forced to provide conventional market competing items. Those who are going to sell cage-free products are likely going to be small specialist grocers in niche markets, advocating cage free, no antibiotics, or organic items. This would kind of be like requiring the Microsoft store to sell Playstations or Switch. Traditionally the brand company would approach a grocer and make an offer to have use of their shelves not the government.

 

It keeps saying grocers in a supplemental food program... so it's meaning WiC. The Iowa R's claim is that grocers would be ''pressured'' which is an odd term to use, to only sell the more expensive cage-free to increase a profit and only providing those with food stamps more expensive eggs to buy. I'm not really getting that logic. This seems rather like the egg/farmer lobby got involved here.

there's not much conventional about corporate agriculture. the only 'conventional' eggs i know of come up the street at my neighbor's. her hens have true free range (not the misleading u.s determined 'free range'), but she doesn't take wic. i don't understand why grocery stores should have to offer any sort of egg - wic or no..

I think we should ban ALL high capacity containers of eggs.  I mean, who NEEDS that?  There is no reason to sell eggs in more than single quantities.
