I didn’t make any snarky comments. I’m simply saying that if you are encountering issues doing it that way that you have other options and this no need to stress over it.

Misunderstanding on my part then, sorry. Probably too long staring at these forums I'm going to log off for a while.  Stressing is my forte, unfortunately. Thank you for your responses!

In Massachusetts all the websites said the same thing about requiring a SS# to register for a marriage license.

When my now husband (on a K1 visa) and I went to pick file for our marriage certificate I actually asked them what would have happened if he didn't have a SS# (like every website said was a requirement). They said it would be fine and they would just leave it blank.

He did have a SS number from previously living and working here but we were worried he wouldn't get his SS Card in time. Turns out it would not have mattered.

As far as receiving the SSN, I've seen a LOT of conflicting advice and I've searched through the website but haven't found a definitive answer.

-With I-94's being electronic and almost instant, how early can you go and apply for the an SSN?

Simple, if you can see your I-94 online, so can SSA.  But I would print out a copy and bring it with you to the SSA office.

https://i94.cbp.dhs.gov/I94

Quote

-How long after applying for the SSN will you know what your SSN is?

When you get the card in the mail.  But from the SSA website its says "Generally 10-14 business days."  Putting that aside its usually very quick as my then Fiancee got hers in about a week.  As usual YMMV.

https://faq.ssa.gov/link/portal/34011/34019/Article/3785/How-long-will-it-take-to-get-a-Social-Security-card

But don't wait until you get married to get your SSA, as then you won't be able to get one until you get the EAD or GC.  Getting your SS number now will make so many things MUCH EASIER.  Yes I know the conflicting opinions and advice on here, but if I may put this out there by asking, What does it hurt to try??  Sitting around worrying about what if's and negative posts isn't going to help you move forward.  Good luck!!

A K1 can get a SSN before or after marriage up until the last two weeks before their 90 entry expires. If you let that time window pass, you have to have an EAD card or green card to get it.

Hi guys,

I have some complicated questions for y'all today that I'm hoping to get some clarification on. My fiance and I are hoping to get married ASAP once he enters the country (within a few days if possible). Which doesn't seem to be a problem for most people... that don't live in certain counties in Michigan.

In my county (St. Clair) it's highlighted several times: "Applicant(s) will be required to present the birth certificates of both applicants and supply the social security numbers of both applicants."

-Has anyone else dealt with a county this strict?

-How did you handle it before you received your SSN or did you just wait?

-Has anyone else in Michigan had this problem when trying to get a marriage certificate?

As far as receiving the SSN, I've seen a LOT of conflicting advice and I've searched through the website but haven't found a definitive answer.

-With I-94's being electronic and almost instant, how early can you go and apply for the an SSN?

-How long after applying for the SSN will you know what your SSN is?

We already have to deal with a "3-day waiting period" after applying for the license, I really don't want to delay it any more than we have to.

Even if you can't answer all of my questions I'd appreciate any input. :D

Thanks

Hey!

So my partner and I live in Oakland County MI and it also stresses a lot that you need a SSN in order to get a marriage license! So, I went to SS Ofice and got my card sorted.

When applied/collected the marriage license at the county office thing - the lady said that I didn’t need a social security number and that I shouldn’t have worried, she seemed confused haha. I was pissed because I ran around like a crazy woman trying to sort my SSN and panicked Incase I couldn’t get one!

So much conflicting info!

This was all last month by the way! So pretty fresh!

Well because I'm a resident of Michigan I have to get married in my county, but I have thought about going to Ohio and getting married in Toledo. I've heard they don't have nearly as many restrictions and there's no waiting period- it's just more expensive! (of course, haha.)

I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens but out-of-state is definitely a possibility.

You don’t have to get married in Michigan! You just have to get your marriage license there :)

You have to get your marriage license in the location of the marriage.  If you get a Michigan marriage license you must get married in Michigan.  A Michigan marriage license is not valid in to get married in Ohio, Vegas or anywhere else other than Michigan

Not so, as soon as you get married your status changes into a "no mans land," for lack of a better word.  You are no longer a K-1 immigrant and you aren't a permanent resident.

The complication or no man's land is only if you want the SSN in a name different than what is your visa

YMMV

It is the "class of admission" for aliens admitted on a temporary basis (i.e., non-immigrants) that SSA goes by. If you were admitted as a K1, your class of admission does not change just because you married.

K1 remains how you got in the country.

Thank you for responding! That makes me feel so much better.  I was feeling like a whopping 160K people live in my county so my office might give me a hard time but every time I've gone into the courts to get paperwork they've been helpful. I guess I'll just have to wait and see but thank you for letting me know how easy it was for you! :D
