A few days ago my case got approved, and I am poised to receive the approval notice, so my question is it possible to use that notice to get myself SSN to speed things up? Or I do have to wait for the card itself before I can do that?

No, you have to wait. What visa was filed for you?

K-1, and no I never got the work authorization, so can't use that.

What I am asking is if you are already in the USA now under the K1 visa, or did you get married and file the AOS? Your post is pretty vague and you do not have a timeline so we need more info.

Does AOS mean something other than adjustment of status? Because I did mention that I got my green card case approved and I am waiting for the approval notice.

What I was trying to figure out if you were back in your home country and got approved for a green card or here in the USA? That is why I said I needed more clarification on it.

No, you have to wait for the ACTUAL GC in order to file for a SSN. What visa did you come on? Gosh man, I am trying to help you out some but getting information is like pulling teeth from you.

I mentioned it above in my first reply to you, I came here on a K-1 visa, didn't apply for work authorization or advanced parole (long story). I got my green card case approved a few days ago and I am waiting for the notice. Sorry, I am not trying to withhold any information, my apologies.

Well it's a lot easier for us trying to help you if we know all the information at the first go round. Since you came in on a K1 visa and did AOS, you have to wait for the actual GC to show up now in order to get a SSN. The good news is that it should arrive within 10 days from when you got the letter.

Alright, thank you.

My Fiancee and I were married, and a few days later, went to Motor vehicles to get her a state issued ID card.  They said "not without a SS #), so off to the SSA department and she applied, and in like 7 days she got her card in the mail IN her Married Name, and the number.. "however"..   it says on the card something like "for employment use only upon DHS approval"  Paraphrasing here but she got one.  The problem with us is that now, her only "ID" is her foreign passport in her maiden name, and a SS# in her Married Name, so it's very difficult to get anything done prior to getting her AOS approved.  We only showed certified marriage,  and her K1 Visa to get it.

With that said, you should wait, because it only take like 7 to 10 days to get it in the mail.   In hindsight, we should have waited, as if she were to get a SS#  in her maiden name,  she would have been able to get on my bank info instead of just "beneficiary".  Then after the AOS change it all around.
