Fifty POUNDS!?  For a fricking LETTER!??!!

Jumpin'  Jehosaphat!!  Someone I know had to pay ten bucks for a copy of their records and I thought that was a lot of money.

SHEESH!!

Fingers crossed for you here too sweetie. (L)

Yeah, I nearly fell off my chair when she told me over the phone. I was expecting £10 or something. Nope. Fifty quid!

Do they think we have a bottomless pocket of money or something? 😑 thank the lawd I got a bonus this month.

Thank you. Here's hoping for the rest of the process to go smoothly. So far, it's been hell!!!

Well soon you will be dropping Pound, quid, sterling, pence, for Dollar, buck, money, cent.    But will have the Queens English which most people adore here.   Get a kick out of children here listening to Peppa Pig and picking up some of the accent.  Mommy, may I have a cup of tea?

Not bad so far. We're both very tired though. All the excitement, mixed in with the trudging through the government #######. And it's been very rainy and blah here since Monday.

Always a period of adjustment, especially after such a long period of anticipation.

Thanks for asking, dear Lotts. I'll be very happy when you're on this side of the pond with the rest of us. :)

It is similar for Lotts and her country-mates. They adore our brand of English!

Well, I suppose we'll find out for sure when we go to the court to apply for the license. Thanks! :)

I wonder if one could proceed with AoS without an SSN, if it were to come to that?

As an aside, all this "YOU HAVE 90 DAYS to GET MARRIED AND ADJUST STATUS  hurry hurry" ####### kinda kills me after all this nonsense making us wait so fricking long just to have our interviews and receive a visa in the first place.

To top it all off, I hear that all the rest of the processing delayed now too!

Sheesh! And I thought the stressful parts were all over with now

HURRRRRYYYY  UP....file your papers....get your SSN...get married....file more papers....NOW.....siddown and WAIT!! Just wait, we'll get to ya when we get to ya.

Good grief! Meanwhile I'm still stuck in 'GET SSN then GET MARRIED mode" I don't even know how or when or what paperwork to file to proceed with AoS yet. I guess I better look into that this week.

SIGH

You can get married without an SSN, the county clerk will ask that at least one of you has a SSN.  Just bring your passport with you when you apply for a marriage license. The clerk told us that the marriage license will be effective after 2 days from the date we applied for the license.

You can proceed with the AOS process without the SSN. I sent my AOS packet last tuesday.

I applied for a SSN 2 days after I arrived in the POE, the SS manager said I will receive it in 3 to 5 business days but it's been 2 weeks already and no news so far. We can't file a joint account with my fiance's bank coz they would require an SSN. I'm hoping to open an account using my maiden name so I can wire transfer my money somehow.

Still here. 😑

GP have only just released my medical letter. Set me back £50!!! Ughhhhhh.

Fingers crossed I don't have to reschedule my embassy interview AGAIN.

Hoping that I can come back on the 9th with some good news.

I have 10 shifts left at work. That's left me feeling excited and anxious... Eeeeeeeeeee.

Good luck on your interview @Lotts! Hope you can make it in time for the Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington DC. ;)

England and the UK are different. However, it's complicated... so let me try to explain.

That region of the world is known by things in three different categories. Countries, groups of countries, and Islands.

England is a country. As is Scotland and Wales. All countries.

The three of those countries sit on a single land mass (an Island), collectively known as Great Britain (GB). Folks from here are called British. Great Britain is often shortened into Britain.

There's another smaller island sitting off the west coast of Britain called Ireland. It is broken into two. A country called Ireland (Eire), and a country called Northern Ireland. Ireland (Eire) is an independent self governed country. Northern Ireland is a actually (politically) joined with Great Britain into something called the United Kingdom (UK). The UK is a collection of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. A single governed place - a United Kingdom. The fact that the island of Ireland is broken into two - one part self governed and the other a part of the UK, has been a political hot potato for decades.

It's interesting that you can be English. Scottish. Welsh. Irish. Or British.  But not UKish.

There's no such thing as an English or Scottish or Welsh passport. You have a British passport. It's a little confusing that you have a British passport even if you're from Northern Ireland. However, if you're from Ireland, you have an Irish passport.

If you're still with me, then... great job, lol.  As I said, it's complicated.

Thanks. I got it. Just weird since I worked in a hotel. Checked in so many guests. Never seen an England passport. Now I understand why

To those going through the USEM Nigeria, once your ceac says visa is issued, your passport is ready for collection. The DHL in Nigeria are highly unorganised and they will not send you a pick up text on time. My passport was ready for pick up on 23 march 2018 but up till 28 March, there was no pick up text. On getting to  DHL office in VI Lagos, they said my passport wasn't ready that i should wait for 10 working days; i showed them a message from the USEM stating that my passport has been delivered since 23rd of March and they went digging through their store and they found my passport.

Morale of this story: DHL is grossly incompetent. The USEM issues the Visa and delivers the passport before 5 working days. Always go to the DHL office to get your passport because they won't text you to come pick it up.

By calling them! They are very polite and seem genuinely eager to provide you any info they have.

Re: all the SSN talk around here...

If you find you can't apply for a SSN right away - ie, your I-94 hasn't been input yet - that's a fluke.  Most people (ideally, everyone) will show up right after entry since I-94s aren't on paper anymore.  Waiting 2 weeks after POE is unnecessary for nearly everyone.

And in regard to getting married with/without a SSN: this is a state- and county-specific issue.  Check with your county to get the lowdown on whether or not you need one.  In my county, we only needed photo IDs to get married, but your mileage may vary.

Only her foreign passport was needed for us to marry, social security number needed for her to get driving license though which we need ASAP
