My postman just brought me something special today, too...a sealed yellow envelope saying  DO NOT OPEN

Visa on Hand,  guys!  Hoo, yeah, baby!

Day 284  :)

Barring any last-minute changes of plans, POE should be March 26th.

Thanks again to everyone on this site who helped and supported me on this rollercoaster Visa Journey :)

YAYYYYYY

I'M SO HAPPY FOR YOU!!

Are you driving down? If so, do you know if there are requirements with your car and stuff?

Thank you for all your help.

Thank you! :)

Yep my fiance is going to drive up the day before and pick me up.

As far as a I know, all I have to do is make a manifest or packing list of the contents of the boxes and containers I'm bringing down, which will look something like this:

3 x 25 gal plastic storage containing: CLOTHING

1 x 4 cu.ft packing carton containing:  CLOTHING

1 x 2 cu.ft packing carton containing:  KITCHENWARE

1 X 32" flatscreen TV circa 2017 valued at: $200.00 CDN

And so on, you get the idea.  Electronic items which are less than one year old carry a duty charge, so I'll bring the receipt for my TV and also, my other electronics to prove their age and value. That's if they even ask. I don't think they're too concerned about it but it's always best to be prepared.

I'm not importing a vehicle or bringing down any brand-new electronics, no pets and nothing unusual or eye-brow raising. :P

I think it should be a very smooth POE. All the reports about crossing via the Peace Bridge at Niagara Falls are pretty hassle-free.

I just checked your timeline...NVC still hasn't got your case yet?

I'm working on SS#'s, New Jersey Drivers License, and Marriage certificate. Also looking at temp health coverage designed for K-1 visa holders ($30-$200/month depending on cover level), and adding her on my cover as a domestic partner or just waiting for marriage.

Where do I go talk to people about those steps? Gain and share knowledge? Many of you people in here likely know nothing about it

Or should I just stay here and hope for the best?

We filed for my fiance's SSN last Wednesday and received it in the mail today. The only documents needed was the SS application, I-94, and his passport with visa. We took his birth certificate just in case. I don't have much knowledge on everything else, but getting the SSN was a breeze! I will be adding him to my health insurance later this week since we just received his SSN (it is required to add him to my coverage).

Same here re: SS number.

Driving license is a big one for me and that is tough as it varies by state and also by what country the fiance is from. There was also some reading i did which said you need to get the driving license ASAP while you have over 60 days validity on the visa, but at the same time before you are married as it means the visa should be considered fulfilled and you start the adjusting process. This may all be New Jersey specific.

I found some very contradictory information on websites about this as it relates to NJ.

Also adding to the confusion is that she may have some special treatment as a parent of a US citizen, that is a specifically mentioned case in the NJ license process.

I worry about the driving since I want her to be able to go out and about and not stuck waiting for me.

Is the NVC closed?

I've tried calling a few times today and it's just saying it's closed and to call back the next business day.

Is this cause of the storm?

or have they blocked my number?

lol
Nah. They have been closed for a few days due to the Winter storms

I am not sure about what you have to do to import your car, but the link above leads to the page where I got my info about importing personal goods when you make your POE. In addition, you can check POE reviews on site here for people's experiences crossing the border.

Here's the link:

http://www.visajourney.com/reviews/poereviews.php?poe=CDN-USA+Border&dfilter=0

These don't seem to be in order of date but you can look through them to get an idea.

I'm not currently employed, so there's no one for me to give notice to. :P  Also, I gave up my apartment and disposed of most of my stuff several months ago. I've been living with family since December, with my containers piled in a corner, waiting for this process to move forward. They say you shouldn't do that, but we had no reason to worry about being denied, so we took the chance. We just didn't expect this to take so long!

She went Monday, we arrived Saturday evening.

After marriage will contact them again for name change. I have seen different answers on your question though, I followed the Visajourney flowchart in the end

If you search under the Canadian forum there is a topic all about importing your vehicle...I have found from reading it that you cannot import a vehicle if it has a lien on it. We are debating what we will do with my fiancé’s car...one more thing!
