N-400 and IRS federal taxes owed

I was recommended for citizenship after my N-400 interview. However, a week later I received a letter stating I needed to submit a signed agreement from the IRS showing that I have arranged to pay the federal taxes I owe for 2014, 2015 and 2016 as well as documentation from the IRS showing the current status and compliance with a repayment program.

But I paid my taxes, in full and on time, for those years and have the bank statements to prove it. I have no need to enter into an IRS repayment program, because I owe no money to the IRS.

Has anyone else encountered this problem?

Not entirely sure, but I would start by asking the IRS for tax transcripts - some you can get online immediately if I recall right.  Otherwise, they'll mail you those, and they should indicate that you have paid or not...

you can walk into any IRS office and ask for printout the same day

they may have reasoned you owed more than you think

otherwise, send proofs (just copies)  keep your orignals

you can also go after collecting the necessary evidence and sit for an self audit showing your proofs

Not any...all the ones in my area require a prior appointment (no walk-ins). My father just had to do this due to getting a larger refund than he claimed.

Thanks for your advice so far. I just got off the phone with the IRS, and they're sending me transcripts which show my payment balance to be $0. Hopefully that will take care of things.

I'll make sure to update this once I get it sorted.

Hi

I had my interview this past Tuesday and everything went well. I owe taxes for the year of 2016 and the IO asked for my transcripts of the last 3 years and for the IRS payment agreement,

when she review them I was recommended for approval at the spot!

There are two kinds of transcripts.

Tax return transcript- shows an abbreviated version of what you filed. Used for affidavits of support. It shows your sources of income and the rest of what you filed.

Tax account transcript- shows what you paid and if you have a balance due.

UPDATE

Thanks for your replies - I submitted my tax return transcripts with my original N-400 application. This merely shows what you owe, not what you have paid. I should have submitted my tax account transcripts instead. Wuozopo's comment above was correct.

I have since submitted my tax account transcripts, which show my balance to be $0. I heard nothing for 3 months, but after a visit to my local field office to hurry them along a bit (showing up in person to ask for an update on the status of my application has helped bring my file to the top of the pile on 2 occasions) my application has been moved forward. I am now in line for my oath ceremony to be scheduled. Progress!
