If your extension letter expires you need to book an infopass appointment at your local USCIS office to receive an i-551 stamp in your passport.

When does your extension letter expire? You won't be able to get a stamp unless it's like 2 weeks until expiration or it's already expired.

Incidentally, they will usually issue a stamp about a month before your letter is due to expire (so 1 year less a month after the expiration of your conditional green card.) I've now been waiting over 18 months to have my petition approved.

Is your timeline updated?

It really depends on the officer and the local office. I personally know people who have received their stamp several months prior, and some who have tried.  Like me, I tried and was denied and was told to book an infopass appt AFTER my extension letter was expired.

Expect to surrender your 2 year (expired) GC.  They will keep it and in return give you a I-551 stamp in your passport.  Be sure your passport will not expire anytime soon as you will need the stamp as evidence.  With the long wait (if the 'transfer to local office' thing is a glitch) I'd personally want at least 18 months left in my passport before I got the stamp.

I have heard of some offices giving you a copy (front and back) of your GC but to be safe I'd be scanning a copy (front and back) prior to attending that infopass appt.  You will need to submit a copy of this when you file for your N-400.

Hello actually I think we are in the same time frames. Does your Green Card expire in August 2017? If so, the Letter actually expires the date of your Green Card expiry, not the date they received the application in May. Very confusing I know.

The fantastically brilliant people at the USCIS did not even think about this!! Usual government BS

The Vermont Service Center is about 16 months behind

the processing time on this site is little  more accurate then the USCIS website and it shows on here that Vermont is bout  5 months faster then California for I-75

even so it is still a slow process
