We live in Michigan and my wife is ready to take a written knowledge test. My question about getting driver license, she have her valid driver license from Peru which that mean she should waive second test for driving test. Her new resident friend who is from Poland had her driver license there and she only need to take a written test and got license when she passed. However I went to secretary of state office to ask that question to lady at desk and she said that she they don't do that but I told her what the point to take second test of driving skills if my wife already have license and she drive all the time? She just need to take a written knowledge test to know the signs and rules. I even told her that Michigan accepted other countries valid driver license and only need to take knowledge test but she shrug and told me that my wife need to take 2 tests but I am having feeling that she have lack of knowledge about foreigner. Can anyone have strong source that show the Michigan does allow that or unless there is limit of what countries that Michigan law allow foreign driver license to only take written test to get Michigan driver license?

I think that what this Polish person told her is incorrect. Maybe she got a learner's permit or she had an out of state license.

There is no way you can use a license from another country to skip the skills' test. The rules are different than in other countries and in some countries they do not even pay attention to the rules. That is the point of the test. Plus, if you are driving in the US with another country's license, you need an international drivers' license. The regular license is not valid in the US.

In general, and every state will have different varying rules so you need to read the MI state DMV website - but if you have a foreign license and know how to drive already you will be allowed to take a written test and a road test. This is a significant advantage compared to someone that is a newbie driver that needs to go for courses or have 50-80hrs of drive time before even sitting for a road test that some states require.

If she already knows how to drive then the skills test should be a breeze.
