thanks all for the clarification.

i'm going to call USCIS and schedule a visit to obtain a I-551 stamp. hopefully this will be sufficient "proof of legal status" to apply for Schengen visa, which requires at least >3 months of permanent residency status in the US (this is my biggest fear, as i had a visa application rejected before from Canada when i was still waiting for my green card). let's hope this would work!

When you were waiting for your green card (I-485 pending), you are considered "pending adjustment of status," which is only recognized by the US as a legal status until I-485 is adjudicated.  Other countries do not recognize such pending status.  To other countries, you either are a permanent resident or you are not.

You will not have problem using I-551 stamp to apply for a Schengen visa.  I have applied for it twice with France and Germany.

Hello all,

Im hoping someone can help me with my travel questions:

1) Im planning to travel out of country (Indonesia) in May with my expired green card + 18 months letter so when I come back to the United States port of entry, do I go to the line for US citizen/permanent resident or non-resident?

2) Anything else I should bring other than expired green card,  18 months letter and visa?

3) Is there anyone here that had traveled in the past and they/immigration officers gave you a hard time?

Maybe I'm overthinking all of this stuff but I just want to be fully prepared

1. You will go through a US Citizen/LPR line.

2. No, as long as your letter extends your expired card until or beyond the date of your arrival in the United States.

3. No, [for me] except for the first time returning to the country as a US LPR, I was sent to secondary inspection for 5 minutes to verify my status.

I have traveled extensively since I became an LPR, and since I filed for I-751.  Not a problem at all.

Yes it is! Mine hasn’t moved from “case status” since last year. I bet they forgot about me ☺️

Hope, I thought I was the only. From what I can tell, the cases starting with WAC181215 and ending with 0400 only a few seem to be stuck at that status, mine included.

Just getting into the group.  Mine is same as many of you who are from VSC for ROC.

NOA1 - 3/27

Biometrics was in June 2018 after rescheduling from May.

Transferred to TSC on 03/11/19.  Got the letter as well.

Have not applied N400.

Mine starts with EAC181235

While not a big deal of a wait - some recruiters didn't follow up after the residency status conversation (even when sent links and used the same wording in USCIS on authorized to work) also got admission but cannot apply for aid.

01/31/2015 : 129F sent

02/04/2015 : NOA1

07/24/2015: RFE1

08/01/2015: Received paper mail RFE1

08/03/2015: Mailed response overnite

08/04/2015: Tracking showed TSC received

08/05/2015: TSC acknowledged that my RFE was received

08/14/2015: NOA2 approved

Not sure if you are talking about college admissions.

You are eligible to apply for a Federal Student loan as a US Permanent Resident.  Pending I-751 has no bearing on it.

I am going to school part time, and I have been able to file and borrow from a Federal Student loan.

I second that; pending I-751 has nothing to do with your status. I am graduating next month this May with a pending I-751 and financial aid.

@neoblast and @GBOS

Yes - this is for admission in BU.  We specifically mentioned about the pending i-751 and the representative responded saying that Federal Aid is only for permanent resident.   This is good info -- I will ask my wife to follow up.

BU as in Boston University?

That is where I am going to school part time.

If you file I-751, you are a permanent resident.  You first file FAFSA online and that validates the status automatically with Department of Homeland Security (though the same system DMV uses when you apply for a driver’s license).  I was not even asked for a copy of my green card.  My social security and green card numbers were verified that I am an LPR.
