Congratulations to all those who have received their approvals and green cards. Considering my status has been " At this time USCIS cannot provide you with information for your case. Please contact the USCIS Contact Center at 1-800-375-5283 for additional information. " for a year now, has anyone had the experience of seeing their status change from this to anything else or in other words, anything sensible. Just curious!  lol

I’m going to canada to stay with family while my husband wraps up the move (we’re moving from Bama to Chicago are in July and my husband is gone for the first two weeks of May for work and I don’t want to be alone (he’s in the army)I’m still waiting for the green card I think it might take a while .... I just don’t wanna get in trouble hopefully it’s ok. I stayed 7 weeks in August and sept 2018 and now currently in canada 3 weeks total. Plus the upcoming 2 months. Let me know what y’all think thanks 🙏

Once you file for N-400, NBC in Lee Summit, MO will create your file for your local office (regardless of how you file for N-400 — online or paper).  As part of that process, the system will first search for your I-751 record, if you are filing under a 3-year rule as a spouse of a US citizen.

If the record shows that your I-751 is pending and has not yet been worked on by the Service Center yet, NBC will request that it be transferred to Lee Summit, MO.  From there, both of your files will await scheduling based on N-400 timeline of your local office.  Both files will be adjudicated at the same time — also known as a combo interview.

Your I-751 will now not be adjudicated until your N-400 interview.

If your local office is one of the backlogged ones in the country — Chicago, Los Angeles, Dallas, Houston, etc. You will have to prepare to get yourself a passport stamp.  Your 18-month extension letter will expire before you get the N-400 interview, the timeline speaks for itself.

are you saying that the 18-month extension letter will expire BEFORE n-400 status will get approved?

does that mean that we are "in limbo" i.e. has no legal status in the US between our green card expires and n-400 approval?

how is this legal? how is this going to affect my employment/overseas travel during this time?

can someone please advice?

i am very worried as i am starting new job in September and planning on traveling overseas this summer (and will need to apply for tourist visa). my 18-month extension "expires" in October 2019. my n-400 projected completion time is January 2020. am hoping that my green card will get approved first this summer, before the n-400 goes through. but is this the case??

thanks for any help in advance.

Do not worry, you remain legal pending your N 400 decision. You can get a  temporary I-551 stamp on your passport to replace the extension letter when it expires

You are completely fine! Your status does not change. If your extension letter expires and you need to travel, you can get an appointment at your local office for the i-551 stamp in your passport.

There is no such thing is limbo in this process.  Once you are a permanent resident, you remain a permanent resident until you choose to give it up or it is terminated by USCIS with legal cause (I-751 denied, criminal convictions, etc.).

Just because the extension letter expire or that your card is lost, for example, does not mean you have no legal status.  It just means, you have “no proof” of legal status.  These are two different things.

If your 18-month extension letter expires prior to your N-400 interview, you can call USCIS and they will schedule you an InfoPass appointment at your local office. You will come in and receive a stamp in your passport (it is known as, I-551 stamp or ADIT stamp).  That will be your temporary green card until your N-400 is approved.  This I-551 stamp is a valid proof for legal status, employment, driver’s license renewal, and returning to the US from overseas.

You will no longer need a green card or a passport stamp after your N-400 is approved, as you will have become a US citizen at that point.

As previously stated by you, your I-751 file has now been transferred to Lee Summit, MO.  This is the beginning of the process for a combo interview for most people electing to file for N-400 while I-751 is pending.  To reiterate, Your I-751 will now be pending until you are called for your N-400 interview.  It will not be adjudicated prior to that point once it leaves the Service Center.  Both files will be processed by a Field Officer who will be interviewing you and your spouse at a future date.
