The handful of Muslims I know that were born to it dress more or less normally, and don't sprinkle their conversations with Arabic. (Probably because they're from Iranian parents, but you know, details, details. ;) )

This would have a LOT to do with it.

But I must say that most of the Arab Muslims (and some Christian ones, as well) whom I know certainly DO sprinkle their conversation with "insha'allah" and "alhamdulillah" and "salam," even when speaking English. It is second nature.

I agree that it can sound a bit forced or even seem like "fronting" when coming from brand-newbies. And there are some people who do seem to treat it as a kind of "look at me I'm Muslim now" signal-marker.

But when you spend a lot of time living in another country, you do tend to pick up some of the speech patterns. (Ever notice how many American VJers are talkin' "nowt" and "chuffed" and such.... :P)

this is key. like i said earlier in the thread, the iranians i know just say khuda hafiz, etc. they use their native language. an american who speaks english as their native language shouldn't be any different.

and peezey, in response to your last comment, i believe neurosyphilis as well could be a strong possibility for such brain-damaged statements.

True -- I have NEVER heard an Iranian say "Allah" hafiz. Most Iranians (other than the Arab minority there) are quite proud to be of Persian heritage, and it realllyyyyyy grates on their nerves to be mistaken for Arabs...
