Watch: Students Walk Out After Female Speaker Declares Men and Women Are Different — 'Nazis Are Not Welcome'

Students walked out of a diversity discussion at Portland State University when Evergreen State College biologist Heather E. Heying pointed out biological differences in men and women.

During the event, titled “We Need to Talk About Diversity,” Heying, writer Helen Pluckrose, former Google engineer James Damore, and moderator Peter Boghossian — a Portland State philosophy professor — discussed “social constructivism.”

Pluckrose explained that it means the concept that there are “innate,” “biological,” or “inherited differences” between men and women are dismissed and everything is learned from societal norms.

Boghossian turned the conversation to Damore's memo, in which he stated differences between men and women, and asked Heying to relate it to what Pluckrose said.

The biologist called arguing a universally accepted concept in biology a “strange position to be in” and stated that there are “differences between men and women that are explicitly anatomical and physiological.”

She pointed to the fact that men are taller than women on average and wondered if anyone was offended by that.

I know.  It is still disconcerting to see how uneducated these students are with respect to basic facts.  Now pointing out facts get you labeled which is just sad.  I guess the MDL doesn't follow Joe Friday's mantra.

Everyone has their own opinion on things and I try to respect everyone in theirs. What gets me is that these students aren't even sitting out the class to hear the 'other' side of the argument. Even if the speaker would be wrong in your eyes you will learn from it and are able to formulate your own arguments better. That's one of the first rules or writing an argumentative paper, study the opposing view and formulate your own counterarguments.

You are correct sir. Even those of us in here in this forum occasionally learn new things by the other side at least I know I do. But you have to be able to sit down and actually listen to a counter argument all while not shutting it out just because they don't agree with you.

I agree, the lack of respect for free speech on these campuses is also a big concern.  It seems like you can have free speech as long as you only speak things these students agree with.

   Most media is reporting this was a planned demonstration against James Damore. IJR seems to be misrepresenting what happened here. Half the people in attendance were not even students, and the disruption was expected as the moderator alluded to. If you watch the entire video, you see the people who left/were thrown out are criticizing James Damore specifically, which is why the disruption started when they brought up the Damore memo.

 

  Damore's position that women are inferior to men as engineers is what is being reacted to. Now it is wrong to disrupt an event just because you disagree with the speaker,  however misrepresenting the position of those involved is not a better thing to do. For one, we don't know how many involved were actually students, and as you like to say Bill, let's not jump to conclusions.  And second, they are not reacting to the fact that men are physically larger than women, they are reacting because someone there actually thinks women are inherently inferior to men.

It is my goal in life to continue to be amazed. A lot of people lose that somewhere along the way. It's such a shame.

What was interesting though is that the protests became excessive when the biologist was speaking, and they seemed to be referring to her, or maybe all three panelist when tossing out their uneducated label. 

 

You are correct, we do not know how many folks were students, but it is a good bet that many of them were.  As to jumping to conclusions, that is just a sign of the times as the progressive MDL have attacked the First Amendment with fascist abandon the last few years, but that gets mostly ignored.

 

Did Danmore say that women were inferior?  I suppose to some it may seem he did, but it seems it was just saying much the same thing regarding biological differences.  His writing skills are less than stellar which is something that many men are bad at, and he gets into some circular reasoning in his memo, but not really sure he is a Nazi as these folks have labeled him along with his fellow panelists.

   Everyone seems to approach this differently nowadays. I can not take you seriously there if you are trying to blame this all on the left. 

 

   I will say, when I was in university, if you thought a speaker was so uninformed or misguided that they were not worth giving your time to listen, you didn't go. You don't need to protest or disrupt someone. Nothing sends a message quite like an empty auditorium.

So the Right is railing against the 1st Amendment?  Btw, which side is promoting the victimhood mentality as progress?  Which side is predominant in education of these students?  Sure, I suppose we cannot blame this entirely on the MDL, but maybe 90%+.

     My first suggestion to people would be to stop playing the blame game. I mean it's OK once in a while, but when it comes up in every other post, we have to consider it might be something else. Everything can't always be someone else's fault.
