Hello all,

My son entered United States yesterday under IR2, my US citizen husband petitioned him but he wasn't adopted yet..simply a step parent. He is getting info on how to adopt him as soon as he can.

My question is what's the next step for him so we can get him the citizenship? do we have to wait for the adoption paper to be completed? His IR2 visa will be expiring on March 8, 2018.

You should pay the immigrant fee here https://www.uscis.gov/file-online/log-online-filing so the child can have his hard copy green card.  His IR2 visa expired when he entered.  He now has a temporary green card (I-551) valid for 1 year so it's best to pay the immigrant fee and get the hard copy.

Have you been married for 2 years?

Your son will obtain citizenship when you do as long as he is under 18.

Looks like you've been married since 2011 so that's why your son received an IR2 and why he will get a 10 year green card.

@NikLR I've been married for 6 years now but we applied late for removing conditions. I've got my 10 yrs green card and I'm eligible to apply for my citizenship this year.

so after paying the immigrant fee the green card he will be getting is good for 10 years? while I'm waiting for my citizenship to be completed.

Yes his green card will be valid for 10 years.  He will automatically acquire citizenship when you do.   Unless your husband WANTS to adopt him, it's not needed for citizenship.
