You are given  6 months. For both. Not a year.

That wording in blue (it can be in red as well) "Upon endorsement serves as temporary I-551,..blah-blah....  for one year" - it's NOT a Travel Authorization. This statement is ALWAYS there! Regardless! Such a form of a stamp.  But yes,  it's up to IO at USCIS office to give a resident I-551 stamp for any time shorter than a year. It can be 1,3, 6 or whatever months IO believes would be reasonable. That's why  "Issues Date/Valid Until" are there.

Huh? The stamp allows entry into the US and work authorization while valid.

And yes, it can be whatever length of time the IO at a USCIS office deems appropriate. Ours was given for less than a little under a year.

I-751 journey

My husband joined the Military and leaves in the end of April for 4 months. I hope they don't schedule us for an interview otherwise we have a problem.

Really frustrating. I checked on the tracker app and it looks like that a lot of cases after me ( October 2016 ) were approved or got an RFE

Hi I am in a similar situation as your husband. I am waiting on a I-751 application and expecting to ship for training with the Marines. Depending how long his basic training and his job training are he might be done with both before they even look at his application. When did you file? Also, I would recommend that when you become eligible file for citizenship it might "Delay" the process a bit but once done you get everything and in the long run you gain time. In addition in might also "Stall" the application some to give him a chance to be done with his training. Interviews are rare for I-751, RFE's are way more common, but if you file for you N-400 before they send any RFE that would pretty much address in advance any additional evidence they might need. So would kill two birds with one stone, sort of speak. I am available if you want to private message me. There aren't that many people in our situation so is a good thing to keep touch to see how our situations develop, and exchange information.

The point was  that sometimes the I-551 stamp is read incorrectly - it's not a Travel Authorization for a year, but Employment Authorization for 6 months. Regardless what "blue" /red" statement says - both authorizations are given till the date, written in "Valid Until" .

Actually, even this is not completely accurate - the stamp serves as a proof of your US residency, but you are LPR and eligible to  work even without that in the passport.   You just, most likely, won't be allowed  boarding for the flight to the US from another country without the stamp.. or after  "Valid Until" date on it.

How many of you submitted case inquiries regarding the missing phantom notice connected to the "bug" number? And how many of you didn't bother?

We did but we have not heard anything back yet. We haven't filed N-400 yet, but I think we will very soon. We have most everything scanned and ready.

I can't apply for N400 because I need to get a certificate from my country that I am allowed to keep my german citizenship. I don't wanna give it up because of family reasons. I filed in October 2016 so almost 18 months ago. A LOT of cases around my case number were approved within the last week but mine still says " case was received at local office" I am sure I will hear from them pretty soon. My husband doesn't leave Basic until May which is pretty soon. I also heard go get a copy from their contract in case you get an interview to show them that he's working for the military and is currently in Texas.

When did you file?

Not yet. I was thinking too long if I should hire a lawyer for it or not and I also thought I have time which wasn't really the case. Now, I just started gathering all information together so I can give the German consulate the package and hopefully get my BBG soon.

ok I got the same message - Moved to local office 28th February - didn't show up on my alerts or texts.  I was at an info appointment two weeks ago after moving from Las Vegas to Boston and was told it would NOT move from California to boston and would be processed there.  So today I saw the message and called them - Tier One told me it was now sent to the local office in Boston and would be anywhere between 21 and 48 months - I did not believe this could be correct and spoke to a Tier 2 - they stated same information and said once it goes to a local office it can't go back to a service center and local offices were WAY behind and I could not make an inquiry now until I was over my time - which is now 48 months from the date that I first filed - October 24 2016. I asked what would happen if I moved to Vermont - as they are way ahead - and he said that is only a SERVICE CENTER - and that it would now be processed at a FIELD office and they were all behind.

When did you file?

I filed more recently, June last year. It seems like you must be close to have your I-751 adjudicated, actually next month according to current processing times, you could file an inquire for "outside of processing time." I would guess that if they haven't sent an RFE or call you for an interview at this point they won't at all. If they do send a RFE I would recommend to have everything ready in case a RFE is sent while your husband is away, so you can take care of everything for him. Interviews as I said are rare on I-751 applications and if a RFE gets sent your husband doesn't need to be there to respond to it. Plus, most RFE's give you like 83 days to respond to them so there is that factor as well.

Please if you don't mind keep me posted to see how everything turns out since your husband is shipping soon. I am glad he got his investigation done already, most permanent residents on DEP are facing long waits before they can ship because of  backlogs on  background investigations.

Wait, so once the 1 year extension letter is through we really have no protection? My 1 year extension expired last month (March 2018) and I've not bothered getting the stamp due to having no travel plans, I do work full time and have not had anyone bring it up, in fact nobody in HR even asked for the Extension letter, now it's sounding like I NEED to go and get a stamp?

I would say you need it ONLY if you need proof of status; i.e. traveling out of the country (hence needing to come back); applying for a new job; applying for a loan/mortgage, etc..

If none of these particular situations apply to you, then I don't see the need to have proof of status. You are and will continue to be a LPR until a decision has been made on your application.

F-1 Visa: Academic years 2007/2010.

K-1 Visa: I-129F sent Aug 2013; Approved Jan 2014.

Green Card: AOS sent Feb 2014; Approved Jan 2015.

Removal of Conditions: I-751 sent Nov 2016; Approved Apr 2018.

US Citizenship: Application sent Nov 2017; Fingerprints Nov 2017; Civics/English exam March 2018; Oath May 2018.

Ah okay, thanks for that clarification Nikkosan, that's what I was presuming but I got a bit scared there when I saw peoples stamps had a specific length written on them
