I got an RFE on march 2 from Vermont office. So the "received at local office update" is not right, at least not for me.

No big changes, but in the today's standart message from my account at dhs.gov site  about "uscisdoingnothing" a date of last actions was changed  on 12.15.2017. Last week it was 09.22.2017  (date of my NOA). I guess it's just changing of my address in the file.

October 2016 I-751 Filer at CSC
Just checked the status in the case status online page and also have the received at local office notice dated Feb 26 2018. Last status that I had seen on the process time page was Oct 12 2016 dated end of January 2018 which is only 12 days before my NOA was received. So was hoping to see something in the mail soon.
My original GC/NOA extension letter combo expired December 15th 2017 so had to make an appointment at the local office to renew my temporary status. I kept a close eye to the process time page and it was coming close to my date, so made a phonecall and the Tier1 gave some info that didn't make sense and contained the same info as the webpage. So additional I made an InfoPass appointment which was about 2 weeks later. The appointment was a breeze although I had to go to a local Walmart (across the street) to have some passport pictures taken. The IO told me that the case was at that moment still at the CSC and that if I didn't have any trouble there shouldn't be any problem and things would go smooth.
This was end of December 2017, had my biometrics already taken in December 2016.

12/15/2014 - GC received

10/19/2016 - I-751 package send

10/24/2016 - I-751 receipt notice/NOA year extension

11/19/2016 - I-797C NOA/bio appointment

big wait

12/15/2017 -  GC/NOA exceeded one year extension

12/27/2017 - received paper I-551 valid for another year

continue to wait..

So I can somehow understand that my case in now being handled after being stored somewhere in a dusty corner. But what amazes me is that people that filed halfway 2017 received the same message. I know that the I-751 is considered a low priority case and it can take some time.

For work I had to pass several times a internal Border Patrol Checkpoint. First time the BP officer didn't even notice that my GC was expired and only noticed/responded to it when I told him I had my extension letter. 2nd Time at the same checkpoint officer was paying a bit more attention and said 'hey it is expired', but when I told him I had my extension letter he didn't even have to see it. 3rd time I had the BP officer from the 2nd time and it was only 2 days later, when I handed him my 'expired' GC I told him the same as last monday, he responded oh you have the letter right? I said yes, he gave me my GC back and wished me a nice day.

But still waiting patiently for the mail...

John

Someone was told that Received at Local Office simply means that your records were removed from long storage and delivered to your Case Officer for action.  The VSC is your local office.  So, your records were removed from storage, delivered to your Case Officer, who the generated the RFE.  (just one of many possible explanations).  Good luck.

The message everyone sees on USCIS website "Received at Local Office" does NOT mean your file was sent to anyplace near your hometown.

It merely means the file was moved from one location to another location WITHIN the building at Vermont or California.

This has been posted here several times, so surprised people still getting excited about this Received at Local Office wording.

Nothing "with that". Whatever website says about  TSC  processing ROC or not, the hard copy they received proves the case is at TSC now.

Apparently, moving some cases to other offices is their way of relieving the backlog a bit. Hard to tell what is the criteria, though.

As I personally see it, it is a good thing. Any movement (being from a basement to an office, or from one location to another), is better than no movement at all.

I never questioned that the file was moved to TSC.

I only noted that TSC does not process ROCs.  So what's with that still stands.

Also, regarding people getting excited about 'received at local office.'

If you look at the new format of  processing times shown on USCIS website . . . the processing times for 751 at local offices extends up to 4 years and more.

So if they really do send someone's file to a local office near one's residence, I guess it is because there is some question about the contents of the file which will cause a significant delay in completing the processing.

So I pray my wife's file is not sent to an actual local office.
