Medical question..?

i got my booster shots at the doctors today, i had told her when booking to see her that i needed the flu shot as it's required on the medical list and we're still in flu season. She told me she couldn't give me the flu shot unless i actually had symptoms of the flu... So my question is, do i really need the flu shot and if so i can get it done at my medical, right? I'm looking to fly back to the US the end of march/start of april... and flu season is over march 31st i've read...would i still need it if i'm leaving around that time?

Also, my mom is unsure if i've had chicken pox or not and i have no memory of ever having them. Do i just tell them no at the medical and i'll probably have to get a shot when i'm state side?

Just double checking everything as i really don't want to go to this medical on friday and i haven't got something right. I've pretty much got everything else ready and done for it.

I'm no doctor but I'm fairly confident a flu shot is meant to be a preventative shot rather than something to treat actual symptoms of the flu. Seems strange to me.

Your doctor can do a blood test to check your chicken pox immunity. Believe it's called Varicella immunity. If you have the immunity, you don't need the vaccination.

Go to Boots and pay £15 rather than whatever Knightsbridge will charge you.

If you don't get the Varicella waived on your Knightsbridge form, you will have to pay a civil surgeon to sign you off after you get it in the US. So having the flu shot now doesn't help you get signed off for AOS by Knightsbridge. It's not going to happen unless you've had chickenpox. Might as well skip the flu shot at Boots.

When you go to a civil surgeon in the US, if it is after March 31, he will use the waiver "not flu season" and sign off on your shots without it.

Whoever this person was who told you that needs to get their license revoked. You cannot take any vaccination shots if you are presenting symptoms. You need to be healthy in order to get a vaccination shot. If you have any symptoms you need to wait until after you get better then go back for the shot. I wouldn’t trust those people.

Now, as for your question, in order to receive the K1 visa you do not need to have the shots, however, in order to adjust status after you get to the US, you will have to prove that you’ve had every single shot on the list of requirements. You can get that shot in the US, but I wouldn’t recommend it as it’s probably gonna be more expensive. Find another doctor’s office that will give you the shot.

As for your your chicken pox, you also have to prove that and not just by saying it. You need a paper trail. However, the will run blood tests on you to see what your antibody counts are to see if you’re clear or not, so you should be good for that.

By the time I go to do AOS it’ll be out of flu season and way into April so getting my flu shot now will be pointless and won’t even mean anything when it comes to it, right?

I was just making sure everything will still go okay at my medical if I don’t get the flu shot.

Not that I recommend lying but this actually isn’t the case.

They simply took my word for it that I had chickenpox as a child. It was shown nowhere on my medical record, and I was not tested.  Fully signed off without question.

For a K1, you can get your visa with zero shots. The point of getting them prior to your medical is to get cleared on immunizations on the Knightsbridge form so you don't have to pay a civil surgeon to fill out an official immunization form in the US.  Most civil surgeons will make you do an entire new medical exam. Your Knightsbridge medical is supposed to cover you for the AOS requirement, but try convincing a civil surgeon to do only the shot page.

A typical experience thread in the AOS forum.

  • My wife and her son had to complete their vaccinations here as well. I had to call around to about 7 or 8 civil surgeons.  One of them even wanted to charge us about $300 just for transcribing the vaccination records to the I-693.  I finally found one that would do it and he did it for only $50 per application.  Just keep calling around and hopefully one will be honest.
  • Just went through this as well, finally found a CS who kind of knew what he was doing about a 2 hour drive away.  The CS in my city wanted to charge $500 for a new physical!  I tried many different routes with each CS I called, some asking for help, some asking them to open the instructions and the sheet so they could read the rules, etc. etc. but the only luck I had was to keep calling until I found a CS that knew the rules.  Ultimately, now, I wish my partner had just done them as a part of the medical and will encourage anyone going through this process to get it done then, before arriving, because it's a pain to try to get it taken care of after.

Without the Varicella waiver for having chickenpox, you're going to deal with a civil surgeon anyway, so do it after flu season and get the flu jab waived.

My thoughts exactly. Who was this person??

The only thing I can think is that I don't think flu shots are free on the nhs. So maybe they meant they couldn't give it to you for free unless you'd had previous symptoms?

In the UK (which this forum is about) the NHS do not give flu shots to kids over 8 or adults except

  • anyone aged 65 and over
  • pregnant women
  • children and adults with an underlying health condition (such as long-term heart or respiratory disease)
  • children and adults with weakened immune systems

The technical instructions for panel physicians say:

An applicant who provides a reliable written or oral history of varicella disease does not require laboratory confirmation or further vaccination. To verify a history of varicella, panel physicians should inquire about: 1. an epidemiologic link to another typical varicella case or to a laboratory-confirmed case or 2. evidence of laboratory confirmation, if testing was performed at the time of acute disease.

In the UK they don't immunize for Varicella so the epidemiological link is pretty much every pre-school or kinder or neighborhood in the country, every year. It's almost rare to not have chickenpox in the UK, so when you tell them "my mum says I had chickenpox when I was 3 years old", Knightsbridge tend to accept that oral history.
