I am still waiting for my permanent green card. It has been more than one year since I submitted my application to CSC. Their site says that they are now handling the case around September 26, 2016. In my case, my current conditional green card will expire at the end of March. To keep my "legal status" before the permenant green card is issued, what should I do now? Getting stamped at local office? Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated!!!

Yeah, getting the i551 stamp is the best you can do because your year extension letter aka noa1 will expired too. This stamp will be useful as you wait for your physical 10 years green card.

Mine took 10 months back in 2015 and of course my 2 years gc got expired while I was waiting . That stamp allowed me to proof my legal status while I was working.

One thing you must understand is you’re still a permanent resident with a pending I-751 and will continue to be until it’s adjudicated no matter how long. Your 2 year expired conditional green card and the extension letter are “evidence” of your status and not the status itself. With that being said what you want to do is to get new evidence to use whenever need be for travel and employment purposes since you’re so close to having the extension letter expired too as well. Visit USCIS.gov, use the search option and search “infopass”. Follow link and schedule an infopass appointment to have your passport stamped with a temporary I-551 stamp at your local USCIS field office. This new stamp will be your proof of lawful permanent residency till you get your new physical green card months down the road.

Make an Infopass appointment at your local office and get the I551 Stamp.  We just did that for my wife as she is in the same boat with her extension letter expiring in Mid-March.  Fortunately, we were able to piggyback a walk-in Infopass with her N400 biometrics appointment, but I think that is relatively rare.  One hint relative to scheduling an appointment, you need to plan ahead 13 days or so and determine when you want to make the trip to the USCIS office, then get on the appointment scheduling website 13 days before you want to go early in the morning to find open appointments.  Most offices book up fast, so Good Luck!
