for the past few years, I have been (as an Advocate) assisting immigrants through a long process; I must say, immigrants, in general, obey the law and do everything by the law, but Immigration is indeed a broken system, it reminds me of "Third World" country where people are only numbers. recently I have witnessed Immigrants given the wrong information or simply immigration have lost their files. it brakes my heart knowing some of those Immigrants have been waiting for 10 or more years and when the time comes for the final step, they discover an error or some of the filing requirement has expired.  I wonder if this is a strategy to add to exhaust to the immigrants or simply a form of racism. Did Immigration staff forget they were once Immigrants?

Not sure why some people go to the racism part right away. IF it was racism your 'clients' would not BE HERE in the first place!!

The system is broken because politicians are interfering with the Law as passed through Congress. Illegals, DACA etc are all clogging up the system. You want a FAST system? Go to Switzerland.....clear cut policies and procedures.

More government, begats Bigger and bigger Government....the only entity in town....where you pay more and get less.....

As a blackman myself, I hate it when folks immediately go to race...it shuts down other valid reasons. My take on this Law. The USA is the most race friendly Law...the implementation is the problem..or lack thereof

Have to agree it is definately more the system being broken than anything. And as you stated, people fighting over things that shouldn't even be in discussion (such as illegals over people legally trying to be here).

I'm the same way these days.., when someone cried racism, I used to always think "how awful"... it is so over used and screamed every time someone questions/argues with someone else these days that it just gets almost ignored as meaningless now. Basically you become desensitized to it where it loses all meaning...

As a black man (and I DO mean black) I completely ignore questions from 'White and black liberals' in this area asking:  So as an African man, have people in the USA called you the 'nxxxxxer' word? Have they discriminated you in work or other areas? When I say nope, they seem deflated and then ask leading questions such as ...are you sure you havent  etc etc....or this cannot be true etc etc...Our Immigration laws are racist etc etc..

....to which I respond. The issue with the US Immigration Laws are ILLEGALS and people wanting to come from 'shxxxxle' countries and then promptly try and make the USA like their countries.

The Democrats were awesome to help us gays out with Gay Marriage etc..but something has gone horribly wrong since Mr Trump was elected....AND yes I mean elected.

OP: In general I'm fairly skeptical and critical of how our government handles most processes, including immigration. I find the process inefficient, redundant, and at times nonsense. It's frustrating, stressful, and at times feels like a burden to those immigrants and their families doing things honestly and the correct way. We've all experienced that, more or less. Mistakes also happen. We see them on the forum every day - either by the USCIS or by the petitioner themselves. I don't believe mistakes are made in a malicious fashion. We have no evidence to suggest that. Have there been cases of IOs and CBP acting very much out of line? Yes. You can find this example at literally anywhere though. Still nothing in that even suggests that the entire process is somehow discriminatory in nature.

You should for instance look at examples of other countries and see some very flagrant discrimination at play and really bad practices. Learn from that and know that as bad as our system might be, it could be worse. Still, the system however lacking in some areas it may be, works for the US. Yes, we are a nation of immigrants, and our ancestors were indeed immigrants. You won't find many Americans that reflect on that robust fact however. It's all about how you can find common ground to relate to someone. My ancestors were here long before the Revolutionary War and they continued arriving here until the early 1900s. I appreciate that, and it's something I point out to others, in reminding them to be compassionate as they can to others. However what has that got to do with the context of mistakes the USCIS may or may not make? If errors are made, they generally can be corrected or challenged.

You claim to be an advocate, which I assume means to help immigrants navigate their cases. You are heavily invested emotionally in the process, likely beyond just being a job. You have a great responsibility to help people and hopefully provide the correct advise if and when problems arise. But an IO isn't emotionally involved in the process. It is a job and they are far removed, as it should be.

This 10 years wait or whatever, do the people involved ensure that their address is kept up to date with uscis? I’ve heard of files being considered abandoned or whatever because no one bothered updating uscis that they’ve moved so they never received correspondence about progress on the case etc.  hardly the fault of uscis when that happens.

As for “third world”, I’m sorry to say but anyone from Africa, like OP and me and a couple of other posters here, knows that the type of thing OP talks about is actually a good day in much of the “third world” (what a quaint, outdated term by the way). In fact often the problem is not people in the same type departments to uscis treating you like a number, it’s having to bribe them to move to your case along, its people paying to get false certificates, passports etc issued. Losing the odd notice is hardly the same thing.
