My mom has just realized her residency is about to expire in roughly 20 days. She thought she had a few more months.

I've read that the N400 process takes 6 months or so. Would she be okay if she submits her application for it before her permanent residency expires? What would happen during the meantime of the waiting process for the N400? Would she be okay for her job, living here, etc? Or should she just renew residency first?

she is on the 10 year visa right? it is still active.. the residency does not expire! they just want you to check in, pay more money, and show that you have not commited a crime.

yes, she can submit her N400 for a USC but just do not leave during this time. the residency does not expire and she can still work during this time!!!!

An expired green card is not a reason for an N-400 denial, nor does it impact her current LPR status. She just won't have proof of her current LPR status after it expires. She should probably make an Infopass appointment to get an I-551 stamp to act as a green card for a year, though...never know when you may need to travel abroad (or prove employment authorization, if not in possession of an unrestricted Social Security Card).
