So we’ve been dating a year in March. So last year, being only a month in, we did a normal Skype call. I’d also sent a birthday care package (balloons, I think a teddy, plastic champagne glass, party hat etc). My birthday in August we did a dinner/movie date: cooked a meal at the same time (very late dinner for him and lunch for me), dressed up and then watched Beauty and the Beast. 😎

For his birthday this year, I’ll call him on the day to wish him happy birthday (since I’ll be at work, only a quick call) but on the weekend he has a day off and we’re going out. We are both going to Outback Steakhouse in our own towns and will FaceTime while there. Yep, sounds lame but we’re keen to do something different and creative! Plus we went to Outback steakhouse to celebrate engagement so should be fun ☺️ And as I say to other people: you do you have to do when in an LDR! You HAVE to get creative and be a little lame.

I’ve seen a few cake ideas e.g actual cake sites that deliver and a diy crafty (realistic piece of cake) you can make and send!

I agree with @LuFlolady, not lame at all. You are creating a wonderful memory that you will honestly treasure for the rest of your lives. Once together I bet you this "Outback Steakhouse" birthday will come up in discussions every year as you celebrate those moments together.

I understand that it's so difficult to be apart, especially on those special days but I do believe that being in an LDR has some very long lasting benefits. Prior to even meeting my fiancé for the first time I knew more about him and was closer to him than I had ever been in any other relationship in my life. (remember I'm the mature age filer so have a little life experience under my belt...lol) Being apart allows us to talk more, philosophize about life, get to really know the inner person of who we are. Sometimes when we're together on one of my long visits we let real life get in the way and realize we just haven't take the time to "talk for hours" like we do when we're apart. So yes, although it is very difficult to be apart, remember you are creating a very strong foundation for a lasting relationship. Communication is key in a relationship and you have no choice but to communicate when you are miles apart from the one you love.

I believe you are correct @SMK 89 with regards to giving up Canadian residency. Here's an excerpt from the Gov of Canada website:

"When do you become a non-resident?

When you leave Canada to settle in another country, you usually become a non-resident for income tax purposes on the latest of:

  • the date you leave Canada;
  • the date your spouse or common-law partner and/or dependants leave Canada; or
  • the date you become a resident of the country you settle in."

The latest date here being the date we become residents of the country we settle in....which I guess is not until we receive AOS. Do you interpret similarly?

It does make complete sense since as you stated if we don't marry (as IF that will happen) we are not entitled to become residents.

I think I do interpret it the same way... I think we are for sure covered under Canada healthcare at least until we are married which is when we can apply for a social security number number in the US, and then our husbands (yay!) can add us to their policy as dependents. Maybe we should call someone? I'm not sure who in the government would have the answer - but we can always clarify based off of our current situations. This must be a common question...

Happy Birthday to your boo thang! lol and no worries we all have out moments...Let it be a moment but then move on after the moment has passed... We will get there my friend hang in there!

Those things are not lame how cute!

Completely agree with you both that these are “hard” times however; my honey and I know that our sacrifices now will God willing pay off SOON for our future.

Snuffles, I think those are amazing gestures for you and your honey to do “together” I am not a creative person at all, thank Goodness for Pinterest because there are soooooo many LDR activities and inspirational quotes, that help us to feel the “void” of not being right there. A few “corny” things I have done is bring my honey Hershey’s chocolate hugs and kisses and placed them in a jar, I put a note that said for your everyday hugs and kisses and then an extra jar for those days when you need more🙂♥️

i looked at my calendar and was like whooooohooooo 11 weeks until first part of July💃🏽💃🏽💃🏽💃🏽 That sounds soooooo much better than saying 3 months to me for some reason 😝😝😝😝😝

So will any of us know when our petitions have been "touched" or will the next notice we get will it be a RFE or NOA2?

I think this "touched" business is for those doing Spousal Visa. I've seen it often with them
I don't think it applies to us K1 folks :D

Since healthcare is provincially governed each province will have its different rules etc. I would gather the best thing to do is contact OHIP in Ontario and I would contact AHC in Alberta. Keep in mind that provincial healthcare will never cover your complete costs while in the US and supplemental insurance is always necessary. It's purchasing the supplemental insurance that may be an issue but then again I have googled insurance for K1 Visa holders and there are insurance providers in the US. My daughter had her appendix out while in the US on vacation and the cost for me would have been outrageous had I not purchased travel medical insurance over and above our provincial healthcare plan. But then again since I'm unfamiliar with OHIP maybe they do cover all costs. Usually it's just the cost comparable to what it would be in Canada and medical services are very expensive in the US.

I totally agree. When I read your post I actually had to look at my calendar because I certainly thought 11 weeks was not quite right. And next week it will be 10....and you know how fast it takes to count backwards from 10...

I would love to find these hershey’s chocolate hugs and kisses. It’s so so cute and sweet.  Having these kind of things(creative at the same time being romantic) makes you feel 10year younger than your age. Nobody wants to be in an LDR, but if that’s the least way to be with our lovey’s, we dont really have choice but to put more extra cute effort.

Thanks for sharing some spice in your love journey @VickeySis ❤️

The latest approval from October was October 27th, there was an approval from October 31st but they believe it was an expedited case. there are still over 2000 applications awaiting review, at least from the scans but there has been alot of silent NOA2 (Approvals that dont show up on the scans).

By end of this week, i will start following and monitoring the November thread to see when the approvals in November will commence.
