Congratulations to you too! They do a great job of making the new citizens feel very welcomed. You will enjoy the ceremony.

Thanks!!

The ceremony is very well organized and an amazing experience. Guests sit in a separate area - upstairs in the balcony. 2 guests is very reasonable, I am sure some had more. They divide the theater into sections - Section 1, 2, 3 etc. From what I observed during my naturalization ceremony, the sections were already preassigned. As you walk into main entrance, they will tell you your section number ( I was in section 3). At first I thought the section was assigned on first come first serve basis but when I entered the theater, I noticed people were seated in a sections 4 or 5 which were further behind. So its random and preassigned. Your seat however in your section is not preassigned. As you walk into the theater, you get seated in your section. I hope that is making sense :) To answer your question, I don't think getting there early will make much of a difference to your seating but probably your guests may get a better seating. I didn't have any guests so I wouldn't know.

@parampara What is the latest time you need to be at the theatre? The time mentioned in the letter is 9.15 AM. Do we need to be in line at 9.15? Also, any idea what the best parking spot is for the event? I live about 1.5 hrs of drive away (and in the morning traffic, it can take longer) and I am trying to choreograph the morning routine properly so I can be there in time.

@gopinatht You don't need to be in line by 9:15 am. People are walking in as they arrive - there will be more than 1000 people at the ceremony. While the ceremony begins sharp at 9:15 am, it starts with a choir singing patriotic songs for about 20 mins. The actual oath ceremony is much later so if you are late, you will still be okay. I took the Bart so can't help you with parking information. I would suggest to take the Bart. It's very convenient because the Paramount Theater is right across the street once you exit from Bart.

Did anyone apply for a passport at the Oath ceremony?

If you did, I have a few questions

1. Did you pay a $35 acceptance fee?

2. Did you have to provide other than the Citizenship Certificate, filled out form, check and a photo?

Thanks!

^ following on the passport query,is it correct that for child passports the child and both parents must be present? I think will take the route of post office application if that’s the case so can get kid one at same time.

Yes, both parents need to be present. If they can't both be, you need an affidavit filled out by the parent who would not be present.

Hi guys, when did you fill out the N-445 form? At the ceremony in front of the officer? Also, can you update Social Security at the ceremony? Register to vote? (I'm planning to apply for a passport later at the post office). Thank you!

Fill out N-445 before you get there. Social Security shouldn't be updated till atleast 2 weeks after Oath. I was able to register to vote as well as apply for passport at the ceremony.

Some info that might help about the oath ceremony in the paramount theatre:

- Consider Uber or BART to get there. Parking is notoriously hard to find near the theatre. We went with the Uber.

- Make sure you sit in in the right section number assigned to you. I was assigned 8 and my wife was assigned 1. We asked at the door if we could sit together and they allowed and guided us to some seats but we realized too late that we were sitting neither in 1 nor 8 but some other section. This delayed us getting our certificate by about 15 mts.

- Fill your Passport applications with BLACK ink. I did not realize that and did it in blue ink and had to redo my application and that of my wife again in black ink

- Make an appointment with the post office closest to you to apply for passports just in case.

- If you plan to apply for passport at the theatre, run out to the passport line, as soon as you get the certificate. I and my wife got our certificates 10 mts late and by the time we were out the theatre door, the line was already out on to the street and was beginning to bend around the block! That left us disheartened and we decided to have lunch (we had not eaten much until then) and just go to a post office later. We luckily managed to get back to the post office close to home to apply for passports.

- Bundle up for the cold weather in the morning. We got there at about 8.10 AM and there already were two long lines on either side of the road, beginning to bend round the corner. They started letting people in about 8.30 AM and the line then moved relatively quickly.

So the big day was pretty awesome! 😊

But I have one question - do I need to file a new I-9 form with my employer? Did anyone else do that? I'm going to submit the naturalization certificate soon for my passport application, so I won't have any proof of citizenship on hand for the next 3 weeks.

I think it depends on how your circumstance. If you joined your current job as a green card holder, I dont think there is anything to do (But you might have to inform HR/Immigration departments just to be sure). If you joined with a non-immigrant visa, I believe they have to update their records so it becomes more necessary to inform.

I joined my current org as a green card holder and I asked my HR if they need anything from me, now that I am a citizen, and so far, it looks like a no. But they have not gotten back to me yet with a confirmation.

Great, thanks! Good to know. Yes, I had a green card when I joined my current job. I looked some more online, and while somewhat unclear, it does seem like we should be OK without any "reauthorization."

I hope everyone registered to vote before yesterday's deadline. If not, I believe you can still get a provisional ballot for the Nov 5th election.

Can I register to vote without the original certificate of citizenship? I had to send the original certificate off with passport application.
