@kasd They asked me (I am not working right now) but that wasn't any issue. They basically want to understand you and your history, so they also ask about employment status. So changing jobs isnt any issue unless you are planning to go on welfare (I would assume)

I see. Thank you! Did they ask about your source of income? I'm just wondering how much details they need.

@kasd I don't remember how it was asked, but they right away figured that my husband and I have a combined income (and that I am home with the kids) right now. Even changed from "unemployed" which I technically am to "homemaker". It was a really nice conversation.

Edit: He isn't a US citizen either and had his interview on the same day (interview was not related to mine; separate)

I wouldn't be worried if you decided to change jobs and have enough money to stay home a bit etc. Just outline reasons when they ask you. Of course imho

@thedarkelf how long does it take for you to get the passport? Did you apply for expedited?

@SFWolf I applied at the passport office for an expedited passport (with evidence of impending flight plans in < two weeks). I got in ~ 2 days. The great thing was that I could go pick up my passport and my naturalization certificate from them in person. I preferred that as opposed to trusting USPS to deliver the certificate without folding it.

@thedarkelf - did you need an appointment? if so , how did you get one? I have a trip I can't move the week after and I'm stressing out about it. I leave the Wednesday after.

@kasd I quit my job a short time before the interview. I was asked reg. current employment, I awkwardly responded saying I was unemployed. It didn't seem to bother him. He just asked me for my last date at work and we moved on to other questions.

@thedarkelf good to know that it's not much of a big deal. Thanks!

I booked mine online ( https://passportappointment.travel.state.gov/ ). If you are leaving the Wednesday after, you can get an appointment there (or by calling) and get the passport ASAP (even within a day). Assuming you fill up all documents, it takes ~ 30 minutes to get done at the office. The only bit to carefully manage is that the earliest appointment you can get is thirteen days before your trip. So you gotta make sure that you time that right.

Were you able to get an appointment within a few days? I just checked now to get an idea of how long the wait is, and the earliest appointment from today is on July 3rd. Did you book before or after the oath taking?

but of course there is an option to call if there is nothing available online.

It says on https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/passports/apply-renew-passport/hurry.html that if you need a passport in less than 2-3 weeks, "You can only go to the actual appointment within 2 weeks of international travel (or 4 weeks if you need a visa)."

So I'm assuming that any time within the two weeks should be okay? But were you told there that the earliest appointment should be 13 days before the trip?

The dates for appointments fill up very fast. I was hoping to go immediately after my oath because it wasn't clear to me how long it would take them to actually get the passport in my hands. However, the earliest date I was allowed to go is at most 13 days from my flight.

So if your flight is say on the 15th of August, you can go any day that is available starting from August 2. You cannot get an appointment date earlier than that.

Oh yea, got it. It has to be less than two weeks from your flight schedule.

This passport thing is also stressing me out. I want to travel the soonest I can after getting the citizenship so I'm wondering if I could make an appointment a week before the oath taking and aim for the oath taking date so I could just go to the passport center right after.
