Here is another good article from a law firm that specifically recommends not to do it:

Why do you keep posting links to articles saying not to do it when we told you here repeatedly not to do it anyway. It is a urban myth that is spread around the world that you need a invitation letter and/or a affidavit of support. When in reality it is hardly ever looked at and if it is it is more than likely negative.

You MIL has several good things in her favor and thus hopefully should be approved with no issues at all.

Another India-centric suspect site.  Best to rely on official DoS or USemb info.

There's a reason that site is replaced with "***removed***" here on VJ. ;) The ability to sponsor a tourist is an urban myth. The link I posted is directed from the DOS. Embassies/Consulates fall under the DOS.

That website is suspect at best, and so is it's advice. It mainly caters to Indian nationals.  Best to consult official US websites.

True story.

A couple of years ago I got banned and all my posts were removed from that site for advising people that invitation letters and affidavits of support were not required for tourist visas. They were literally telling people to provide bank statements and tax returns to "sponsor" in addition to an actual affidavit of support for visitor visas for their friends and family. I wasn't rude or disrespectful in any way yet got no warning or contact from the site's admin. They just banned me after I posted how foreigners must apply on their own merit.

Haven't been back since.

Seems mainly focussed on selling iffy travel insurance, one mod, lots of single posts most of which never get replied to other than by the Mod!

You too?  Same here.

They banned me because I too advised tourist visa posters on the site against both those documents. The mods suggested that I refrain from posting as such, and when I reposted legitimate facts, the posts began getting deleted. When I persisted, they banned me. I reckon the mods\site entity had a financial interest in keeping things as is (India-centric fee-based consulting agents perhaps).

I know most people in her situation get a renewal online when the apply.  She will probably not need any interview and just has to send her passport.  Don't worry so much.  If it gets denied, it does, but I know very recently similar situation the person did not even had to do an interview.

I’m guessing that would be because the simpler something is, the less you need to pay someone else to do it. If an attorney or “consultant” can make you believe it’s complex enough, they can probably convince you pay them to “help” you with your application.

Really? Interviews are only waived for younger than 14 and older than 80. What are the ages of these “most people” you know?

Waivers can also apply for somebody with a previously valid visa but expired for less than 12 months.

Yeah, possibly a financial aspect, and they didn't want any obstacles in their way.

Maybe the poster meant interview waiver for a b2 renewal (provided certain criteria are met)

I have heard if it happening in India, I know it does not work that way in the UK.

Three people actually - 2 were 60 plus and another was 45.

Please se just go online and try apply her visa.  You will likely get a waiver.
