For anyone who care to know, you can actually book your interview before you get your packet 3 from the embassy as long as you have filled ds160, so as to secure a date from falling through to another month...

But it’s advisable to do that when the embassy has received your petition, they usually send packet 3 from when they receive it to 3 weeks depending on the slot they have...

Where do you get this information? Do you have a solid resource or document to prove this statement? Coz our lawyer protest against it. He said when filling out the DS160 they ask if you have received confirmation from embassy. Wish we can do it before package 3 .

Marriage Clearance is this needed? If so it is a requirement for SA citizens only? Like the Unabridge BC is for citizens(Born)  of SA.

Document you need is a letter of No impediment with Unabridged certificate. You get both from Home affairs

Hey Fellow South Africans,

How long is a police clearance valid for ? I saw a K1 instruction page saying a police clearance is valid for 12 months , and someone else says it's valid for 6 months. Can somebody clarify for me 😰

SA police clearance is only 6 months.

I cannot remember where in my DS160 asked me for that question. I filed my DS160 way before our petition left NVC and i had no problem, same applied to Desirelb (One of us on here) did.

Wish there were a legal document on the site saying you may do that. But everyone I know or met so far waited for Embassy instructions before schedule interview. I know people jump the que for booking interviews this way but if you work through a lawyer, you have to do it by the book. Guess I will just have to wait and be patient. Another 2 months wont wake any difference. We are already on month 9 since we filled.

@kemm360 and @Vintage girl thank you again for all of your insight. We finally went from 'in tranist' to 'ready' today! Contacted the embassy via email, not sure if that helped or was just a fluke but either way, very happy!

DS160 is an online form that has a lot of pages in it to fill. You can fill and either submit it or not submit it and the site can hold your application for 30 days if you choose not to submit yet. All you need to fill DS160 is you case number or initial petition receipt number. You can always go back to edit it you did not submit.

There are lot of informations they ask about oneself on there. Plus you will need your US passport photo in digital to upload on there, just too many informations for me to wait till i get packet 3 to start. People fill it and not submit it until they get their packet from the embassy then they submit and book a date straight up. You can’t book a date without a submitted DS160 confirmation number...

Follow your lawyer process though. I know gone through this process before 2 years ago so i need no lawyer to do this simple part for me.
