In addition to the DHL references that are already known ("EXP DD MMM YYYYA"), I found a new reference format that is used by the NVC: MMM YYYYX.  X is a serial letter that that goes from A to Z, as necessary.  MMM YYYY corresponds to the month of interview, NOT the month in which the package is shipped.  There is a space between MMM and YYYY, and no space between YYYY and X.  For example, it is Feb 2018 now, and NVC is shipping files for interviews that will take place in Mar 2018.  For each embassy/consulate, the reference for the first package shipped this month for the interviews in March would be MAR 2018A.  The next package, if there is one, would have a reference of MAR 2018B, and so on.  I have seen the serial letter going all the way to T for the busiest consulates.  You can give it a try.  I am not sure what is the difference between packages shipped with the "EXP DD MMM YYYYA" reference format and those shipped with the "MMM YYYYX" reference format.  Is there anyone with inside knowledge willing to shed some light?

Also, I have noticed that the DHL tracking for NVC packages does not work (i.e., no package can be found) for the packages destined for the following countries:  China, Iraq, Israel, Jordan.  Does anyone know the reason why?  At least it worked for China a few years ago based on the old posts here.  I am curious to know what has changed.
