Hi all. I'm an Aus citizen married to an US citizen and been living in North California since 2012. I have a green card.

15 months ago we had a baby. I want to get an Australian passport for her too. But I have a few questions:

1. Does it matter if she gets US or Aus passport first?

2. Should I get her Aus passport here, through the San Francisco consulate or should I just use her US passport to get to Australia then get her Aus passport there? Cost vs convenience...

3. What of I only get her Aus passport here to use for her first international travel? What should I put as her nationality on the custom forms?

Or anything related to this would be appreciated. Thank you all.

Hello! I don't have any experience in this area, just a personal opinion on an interesting topic ☺️

I would think if you were continuing to live in the US, the US passport would be the priorty because you would need your child to re-enter the US on the US passport (by law). If you were only visiting Australia temporarily, presumably you can just get the Australian visa waiver for the US passport? If you're wanting to be in Australia longer than three months, then both an US and an Australian passport makes sense. Have you registered your child for Australian citizenship?

Edit: the US embassy in Australia website says this about it. Apparently you technically need one for visiting Australia too. https://au.usembassy.gov/u-s-citizen-services/citizenship-services/dual-nationality/

Good luck!

I'm jusssst about to go through this, lol.

To leave the USA, she'll need a US passport first. “…it shall be unlawful for any citizen of the United States to depart from or enter, or attempt to depart from or enter, the United States unless he bears a valid United States passport.” ... She'd be a US citizen first (by birth) and an Aussie citizen by descent. (at least, that's how I'm reading it).. https://usa.embassy.gov.au/citizenship  and http://www.homeaffairs.gov.au/Trav/Citi/pathways-processes/application-options/descent

And yeah, looks like your San Fran office will be the place to get her AUS passport :)

My take it the kiddos will leave the US on the US passport and enter AUS with the AUS one... lol . So I plan to apply for the US one first, and AUS one when that's sorted.

Karlzy's on to it and already given you the link to apply for citizenship by descent (see below):

As for Medicare, given you've been out of Australia for more than 5 years, do you still have yours? If so, you can apply to put your child's name on your card (once they have citizenship). If not, you'll have to prove that Australia is your residence to get it back. Again, not my personal experience so someone who knows the nuances might be better able to assist ☺️
