A family emergency before AP

This is a horrible situation, and I knew there was a chance it would happen before I came into the country, but I decided to take a chance.

About a week before I moved to the US my mother's health took a sudden and violent turn for the worse. By the day I left we all thought there was a good chance she would improve. She hasn't improved, she's slowly been getting worse. My family is now telling me that they think she will die soon. My sister estimates a few weeks, three at the most. My aunt is not so hopeful, she says as soon as one week.

My biggest problem is that my AP hasn't been approved. I've heard that there's an option for emergency travel, but I haven't been able to find any information about that. I want to be prepared to go home in an instant, but I don't want to have to go through the whole immigration process all over again. Does anyone know anything about this, or are there other options open to me.

I'm really scared and I just want to do this right.

Thank you so much for any help.

Maybe someone with experience will pipe in here -but I think our best bet is an INFOPASS appt at your local office where you can request emergency AP.

My suggestion also would be Infopass... Sorry about your mom. My prayers are with your family.

To apply for emergancy AP you will need to make an infopass appointment at your local office.... take proof of the emergency like a fax from the hospital that is treating your mom or fax from the doctor... you will also need to fill out another AP form and if you have the NOA1 for the one you filed take that as well...

I hope things improve with your Mom...

I had the same situation happen to me after I moved to the U.S.

I sent in my AP application, and before it was approved, I needed to return to Canada quickly. So, I made an InfoPass appointment, and took a letter from my Mom's doctor (which they had faxed to me) and I got approved within a couple of hours. I left with my AP documents and was able to travel right away.

Make sure you take all your AP documents with you to the InfoPass appointment, and you have to have a letter from your Mom's doctor describing her condition, etc. or you won't get your approval.

Good luck.

Thank you so much everyone. I made the appointment for Thurs. I will make sure I have all the info when I go. Fortunately my aunt had the presence of mind to get the doctor to write me a note, so there's no need for a fax. I talked to my dad today and he said she's taken a serious turn for the worse in the last 24 hours. I bought a plane ticket today for Friday night so I can return with some family members who have been here visiting me. I'm going no matter what happens in my infopass appointment. I really hope they approve me right away. I just hope that we can make it back before she dies.

Infopass appointment is the best option but make sure you get all the details of her illness. They would not accept a doctors letter just saying that my dad was terminally ill with cancer they wanted to know the exact medical terms even though they did not know what they were so we had to get a second letter from our doctor which meant a second infopass appointment the following day. But once you have the details they will give you the AP the same day.

Good Luck
