if you went east for 25000 miles how far away away is your starting point?

That really depends on what latitude you're at at the time... if you're close enough to the poles you'll circle the globe two or three times... and it also depends on which way you want to measure - behind you or in front of you.

I've got a feeling that measurement has some significance I should remember, but highschool geography was 20 years ago and my headache's come back... I'll look it up in a minute.

About.com Geography homework help http://geography.about.com/library/faq/blqzcircumference.htm says:

What is the circumference of the earth?

The circumference of the earth at the equator is 24,901.55 miles (40,075.16 kilometers).

But, if you measure the earth through the poles the circumference is a bit shorter - 24,859.82 miles (40,008 km). This the earth is a tad wider than it is tall, giving it a slight bulge at the equator. This shape is known as an ellipsoid or more properly, geoid (earth-like).

So that means that if you travel 25000 miles exactly at the equator, you'll overshoot your original starting point by 98.45 miles. So it will be that far away behind you... but don't ask me to work out how far it would be to go around again!

Again, it depends on where you are... if you're at the North Pole they're a creamy yellow. If you're somewhere in the US they're brown or black or a honey-colour. And if you're down at the South Pole there aren't any...

What is unusual (among states) of MT's approach of dealing with moving violations?

No idea. If it was Texas I'd ask if they shoot you... but Montana I don't know. Do they write the offense up on the back of the closest cow and make you herd it to the police station when you pay the fine?

They hand you the ticket and collect the fine on the spot--no court appearance.

(real nice if you happen to be in a packed 15-passenger van, and can divvy-up the fine) :lol: :lol:

Ah... nice. And does the fine go onto the record, or into somebody's pocket?

Well, I got stopped once and fined $20 for doing 10 over limit (85 in a 75 zone). I guess the fine is supposed to go into the state treasury (the offence doesn't go on the record, as I checked later).

Judging by the soggy coldness of their average fry, not hot enough!
