What kind of toy does the archaic term "velocipede" refer to?

I know that one without even looking it up! Isn't it one of those antique bicycles? Or was it an early motorbike? I've heard the term but I'm not sure which... I'll have to go google it and check

The velocipede was a pre-runner to the bicycle - it had two wheels at the back and a seat for the person to sit on and peddle by pushing on a treadle, or later on by peddling directly on the front wheel. There's a neat picture too.

But the poster didn't WANT me to do the work! Besides, Sriniv's right - I never said I KNEW the answer, just that I'd make one up (serious questions get serious answers... but fun ones get whatever!) It's fun to do google searches for things that I'd never think of looking up off my own bat...

Having just read The Interlopers, I'm not going to give the answer to the question because it would spoil the story... if you want to know, go and read it. It's only one page long, even if it takes a little effort to get through the slightly antiquated prose.

The myth is that the Autobahn HAS no speed limit... but apparantly that's not quite true any more.

To summarise, the Autobahn is not a super-highway, it's a regular roadway, albeit a very well-designed and well-maintained one. There are 12,044km of Autobahn (I had no idea there was so much!) and you can get to practically anywhere in Germany on them.

And now for your question. There are several 'speed rules' for the autobahn system. Vehicles which can not go at at least 60kmph(36mph) are forbidden to go on the road, so in effect there is a minimum speed limit. This is also the maximum speed limit in construction areas. Rather than having a 'maximum speed' on most of the road they have a 'suggested maximum' of 130kmph(81mph) and 80 for trucks, busses and heavily-laden vehicles. If you have an accident and you were travelling faster than this you're liable for costs. Parts of the system have electronic signs that change the speed limit in response to weather conditions... and builtup/urban areas also have speed limits.
