I've been waiting for a document from overseas for nearly a month now and rather than delay the process further (it will likely need to be certified adding an extra couple of weeks) I was thinking about just filing my N-400 online and providing the document later.  I assume this is possible via the portal?  I know the document will be needed, but I assume that the case isn't even looked at fully until close to the interview date (or even on the date) so there's no harm in providing it later.  Am I risking delays by not including it at the date of filing?

They have a checklist for the N-400 - what document are you missing?

Also - there are limitations to filing it online - on the USCIS website:

"If you are applying based on your military service, are applying from outside of the U.S., or are applying for a fee waiver or reduced fee, you cannot file your Form N-400 online."

I only mention that because I don't see any information on your profile or timeline that could be specific to your case.

It's just a certified copy of the court records showing no charges were filed for an incident where I was detained but never arrested.  The online form prompts you for documents based on the disclosures you make, so I was just wondering whether it gets locked after you submit the application or whether you can continue to add documents while you wait for the interview.

Not at all - when I applied for the application for my replacement green card (long story) - after I submitted my application, I added a copy of my police report later after my status updated to NOA sent.

Ok, thanks good to know.  I suspect the doc will arrive early next week so I'll prob just wait until Monday or Tuesday and if it doesn't arrive I'll just file and submit it later (should have filed weeks ago in hindsight).
