He was on the FBI's radar due to a youtube video.  If that is documentation of mental illness, then there are a lot of entertainers that would be on that list.  Maybe someone like Kathy Griffiths.

I pretty sure it is already illegal to obtain a gun if you are mentally ill. Try again

and like i've said, the question has been answered numerous times over the years. gun control. more gun control, less guns. less access to guns. my bad if discussing seems rather pointless, considering comments such as below....

Don't liberals own guns too?  Yes, this has been discussed, but as usual, it is just the same old MDL rhetoric.  Not really sure how they plan to get around the second amendment with the "new" laws they, the MDL, propose.

Some thoughts here:

 

The solution sought by some is to have teachers armed, or to simply have armed guards in the hallways. But I would ask how would we address the safety issues regarding that aspect. How long will it take before that armed guard is the one aiming his rifle at kids? How long will it be that a teacher doesn't pull out his gun in anger, or accidentally discharges it, or it is stolen from them, or there is a workplace violence incident. These are real possibilities that then get brought into the equation. Also, there have been several school shootings where armed guards were present - they prevented 0 deaths.

 

Remember that the fire alarm had been pulled, so everyone was reacting as they should have to flee a potential fire. By all accounts, he breached a side entryway door in a hallway and began firing at the students via the narrow hallway, in a position he was well protected from.

 

By all accounts he was certainly mentally deranged, previously attended a mental health clinic, and had made threats both in person and online. He had attempted to sell weapons at school, had threatened teachers and other kids - had his own mother call the cops on him....  and still managed to purchase guns (which imo was at an age I don't feel comfortable with). We only hear about the AR15 purchase, but he certainly had other guns too. We all probably agree he shouldn't have ever had access to a gun - so how do we prevent a person like that from obtaining one?
