I understand what you are saying. But people DO say that murder is common in this country.  It has been said right here in this thread; if not directly, then alluded to with dramatic words.  When people die at the hands of a gunman, it is a shocking (well, perhaps the shock is wearing off due to media coverage?) and dramatic thing.

Technically, alcohol-related auto deaths are not murder because they are not premeditated.  And gun-related deaths (most of them anyway) are murder because they are premeditated (even though it can be argued that the killing was a random act of violence because the shooter did not target a specific person).

But at the end of the day, whether one is a victim of a drunk driver breaking the law and getting behind the wheel, or a victim of an indiscriminate shooter, that life was stolen from them and their loved ones.  Dead is dead, at least as far as the family and friends are concerned.

As to the base of your last point, can something be done to prevent gun deaths... I honestly don’t see what more can be done today (since so many of the rules around legally owning a gun are skirted) short of banning them.  And even if guns were taken off the market today, it would take decades before we see much of a difference, I fear.

I would say relating to young people, raising the age for ownership of all firearms could be looked at. In teenagers we can look at all causes of death and see that murder and suicide are the second and third highest causes, behind accidents. Firearms are statistically significant when looking at their involvement in teenage overall deaths (not just murder).

So raising the age to own a gun will cut down on teenage gun accidents and suicides? How about education?

Good point.  Roughly 50% of all suicides were by gun in 2014.    https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/fastats/suicide.htm

Suicides are trending upwards from 1999-2014, particularly among women (wonder why the increase, and specifically, women?) But gun suicides are actually down a bit; suffocating suicides are on the rise.  Strange, to me.  https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/products/databriefs/db241.htm

I’m not sure raising the age would lower suicides (considering that there are a fair number between the ages of 10 & 17), but it would be a simple change to make and see if an improvement were made in 5 years or so.

United Airlines have also just cut ties with the NRA.

Get a few more big companies cutting ties with the NRA, Fat Orange Nixon will be singing a different tune.

and in the can't make this up department............

Quote

Students in Louisiana thought this math symbol looked like a gun. Police were called

A discussion among students at Oberlin High School in Oberlin, La., about a mathematical symbol led to a police investigation and a search of one of the student’s homes, according to the Allen Parish Sheriff’s Office.

On the afternoon of Feb. 20, detectives investigated a report of terroristic threats at the school, where they learned that a student had been completing a math problem that required drawing the square-root sign.

Students in the group began commenting that the symbol, which represents a number that when multiplied by itself equals another number, looked like a gun.

Nothing more than a PR stunt, an attempt to gain loyalty with their flying base.  And I expect it to amount to about as much as their “human trafficking is a crime” slogans.

Trouble is, the NRA doesn’t sell guns, and hasn’t been responsible for killing anyone to date.  Some people just want to feel good and have something to lash out at.

Ahhh, the dreaded square root symbol.  Teachers who know the real deal are calling for the banning of this deadly symbol.  I’m sure someone will start a petition to rename it to the “symbol of war weapon”.

Education. OMG, why didn't someone think of that before? We could have ended murder and suicide years ago.

Why not? Guns aren't going anywhere anytime soon if ever in our country . We teach kids about nutrition in school so they eat healthy. We teach them not to do drugs and we used to have driver's education so they learned how to drive responsibly. Yet any mention or image of a gun in schools will get them expelled. Instead they get educated about guns from the Xbox and from Hollywood. Then when something bad happens people want to blame the NRA. Liberal logic at its finest.

That’s primarily because the majority of non-gun-owners have zero clue what the NRA is all about.  And they won’t take the time to get smart on the matter.

Comments like yours are the reason why there will never be a serious discussion about the problem.

Teaching someone how to handle firearms will help prevent accidents and hopefully teach responsibility. I don't think it will prevent murder or suicide. People don't accidently do those things.

I'm using the same reasoning here that causes car insurance to go way up for male drivers ages 18-25. Even if you haven't had an accident, theres this thing called the male brain that just causes problems at that age. Even in males who have relatively good judgement, the lapses in judgement tend to just be much worse than in people over 25. I don't think there's a good argument against that. The argument is what and how much would limiting access to firearms accomplish.

I’m guessing that many non gun owners aren’t really interested in finding out what it’s all about . And that’s fine as long as they don’t go spouting half truths and wrong information.
