Let me get this straight. 911 puts you and hold and you say the police are incompetent.

Yet you want me to depend on them to defend my family.

Now thats funny as rip right there.

Sad but funny

911 does indeed put you on hold or hangs up, and the police are incompetent (I'd say deeply corrupt though there are some good cops... that are quickly leaving the force..).

It ultimately doesn't matter in the city - you shoot someone on your property and you're in big time trouble. There are some cases of self-defense in B'more, but you're taking a big gamble as to how the police will treat it especially in cases where 'duty to retreat' common law here gets mighty complicated - even in one's home, use of self-defense must not be considered 'excessive' in a host of scenarios. The person likely would literally have to be physically attacking you first. There are also regulations about carrying weapons outside the property for instance, you might be able to carry a knife, but you cannot carry it concealed and leads into the rabbit hole argument of what defines a switchblade from a penknife or pocketknife and if the police even care about that when arresting you (hint they don't.. they got quotas to fill). Concealed carry is not an option for many apparently either, as this woman discusses: http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/opinion/readersrespond/bs-ed-gun-laws-letter-20170314-story.html

As I said previously, for personal reasons using a gun was not an option for me or my family. That's just not something that's comfortable for you and I understand. I have carried a knife before and pepper spray, and I bought a knife and heavy duty multi-tool for my husband that he is allowed to take on campus (as there are restrictions). He did not receive any active shooter training, beyond a short video (and there have so far been no drills) - so I asked him what he would do in that scenario? He says he memorizes the floorplan of the building all the time, to find areas where he could run, hide, or fortify. Currently the only way staff can contact security is to get to a phone in a hallway - but what if a shooter had already entered a classroom or was in the hallway? We've discussed ways he could modify a new tech system to create something that the teacher could use to press a hidden button to alert.

Also most murders in Baltimore are targeted. The two recent deaths that were deemed to be non-targeted murders where thought to be instances where the person being robbed decided to fight back during the robbery.

I know it has been discussed multiple times in Baltimore with friends and co-workers, if you are robbed at gun point or knife just give them what they want. And sadly I know far too many people that have been assaulted or just robbed at knife or gun point. My office buddies' husband was assaulted and robbed two days before their wedding last year, my other co-worker held at knife, a gym buddy held up at gun point, the list goes on. It's a real conversation in this city.

Listening to the NRA at the CPAC conference was like watching diahorrea coming out of their mouths. Just the same tired old excuses to justify anybody having a weapon of war.

if you want to reduce gun violence, reduce access to guns.

There is no such thing as gun violence.

That may seem logical to you, but as a person who has had access to guns for a very long time, and never seen any violence associated with gun ownership, I find it more logical to restrict the violent sort from interacting with society in general.  One is about as easy to accomplish as the other.

let me know when you join reality. better yet, go tell survivors of gun violence there's no such thing. that's like saying..there's no such thing as domestic violence. no such thing as gun violence yet we keep record of gun violence statistics.

Haha. I made my husband promise if he ever gets robbed that he would not pull this kind of maneuver, because I truly believe he would try.

My husband made a good argument last time I was in Australia with him.

I had less of a chance getting hurt when swimming around the Great Barrier Reef with the possibility of sharks than walking around Baltimore. Haha.

So in the end I went snorkeling because he made a valid point.
