Laugh if you want, but my plan would offer our children in schools far better protection against these killers than what they have now......The truly laughable fact is that naive people actually believe that gun free zones do anything but make some liberal minds feel good about themselves.  They sacrifice our children in order to feel good about themselves.....smh.

you can laugh and call people naive but, i live in a rural area with plenty of guns. lots of gun owners, i hear gun shots when i go out in my backyard just about every day. there have been armed police officers on duty at all of my son's schools and  if you ask individual teachers they do not want to be armed in school. they do not want to open up all the possibilities that come with multiple guns on a premises with children. i have not heard of a single teacher publicly calling to be armed at any of our school board meetings - none.

Yes, you're right. I forgot about that one. But she was with her husband, so question is whether it was his idea and she simply assisted him.

If we implement a phycological screening for 25 and under, persons who may have mental health issues will be banned from buying firearms at that time. I don't think it even needs to be a permanent ban. I subscribe to the notion that under 25s are still developing mentally and some (not all) have inbalances that make the reckless and dangerous.

but why just 25 and under? i think anyone wanting to purchase a gun should have to undergo psychological screening.

To solve the problem of mass school shootings is what this thread is about. Not gang violence in inner city Chicago. On a good day B'more can give Chicago a run for it's money. But it is inherently a different issue. Want to solve those? You're going to have to tackle poverty, gangs, drugs, and a variety of other factors.

You stand a greater chance of being stuck by lighting than being killed by a mass shooter.

If we stopped young black men with guns from killing our gun crime rate would be that of gun control countries.

Why dont you care about young black men

Most gun owners don't want such a screening. And I think the NRA prevented that to become a rule.

I know, and I understand that viewpoint - there is a view that it would give doctors the ability to become defacto banners of people's access to firearms. It comes down to compromise and appropriate over sight within the law. I also get that neither side will ever compromise.

they have to be, there is no other option. giving everyone a gun is only going to increase the number of gun related injuries and deaths. arming people doesn't clean everyone up into a simple category of 'good guys' and 'bad guys'

That's cool.

Does that mean we behave stupidly in a thunderstorm and let chance happen as it may?

I care about young black men, NB. Would you like to start a thread on that completely unrelated subject in how you'd like to address inner-city violence? Seems to me this thread is about a school shooting in Florida, and we all know who the perp was.

As an aside to the current direction of the topic, I was reading live comments people were posting yesterday while this killer first appeared in court.  One person said they were sorry for how society let Cruz down.  They were sorry for the 17 deaths, but even more sorry for Cruz and how society had failed him.

How, exactly, did society fail him?

Begs the question, are the rights of potential victims less important then the rights of a potential killer?

I understand that not every mental ilness will lead to someone becoming a killer, but some ilnesses ( like schizophrenia) change someone's personality, and if untreated they can become a danger not only to themselves but also to other people. Allowing someone with such an ilness to own a gun is waiting for a disaster to happen.
