Those of us with children in high school, or who have had children in high school are perfectly well aware that they are capable of solid opinion, reasoning and decision making. The only thing lacking is experience, which only comes with time.  Anyone who is not aware of that I would guess doesn't have kids and is perhaps too far removed from their own youth to remain aware of that fact.

agreed. but i don't expect much from those who believe this generation lacks empathy and respect for human life because of video games. laughable.

So Parents and Teachers have no impact on Children's views on life the Universe etc?

Must be on the wrong thread.

Wasn't it a high school student that did the shooting here?  Seems his reasoning skills were a bit lacking considering he had no value for human life.

Ex, he had been expelled, but was doing his GED.

Well not on Valentines Day because he never went to school on Valentines Day. Natch.

we're talking about the high school students that are rallying together to bring about change, since they do not see much effort coming from those in charge and many of them just watched their friends die.

you and others here are saying they've not made this decision themselves, they're daca recipients, they're being paid, they're nazis, they're brainwashed by libs, they somehow also lack empathy/value for human life. seems to me like you simply don't agree with their response so you're attempting to discredit them in anyway possible. typical, pretty much as to be expected.

now..if all these kids had said 'we want all the teachers/school admin armed and video games to be banned' i'm quite sure you wouldn't be trying so hard to characterize their opinions as irrelevant.

They do lack a lot of the social skills that a lot of us older(gosh I feel old at 34) people have taken for granted. That is why I try to limit my children's electronic usage because I want them to grow up with ACTUAL REAL LIFE SOCIAL SKILLS. I have seen people that have no actual ability to carry out a long term physical conversation because they are used to hashtags or social media/msging conversations.

lacking social skills is different from lacking empathy and respect for life.

concerning electronic usage and social skills, it goes both ways.  those of us who did not grow up with hashtags and such will not be able to communicate/socialize in the exact same manner as the upcoming generations. this isn't some new phenomenon, humanity is constantly progressing/evolving. the old is left behind and new takes over. limiting kids screen time is great, and i think most parents do limit - especially when kids are younger. but hashtags and social skills and electronic limits or lack there of are not what just killed 17 people.

I feel that it does limit empathy and respect for human life. There are parents out there that just give their children the tablet or the phone in exchange for not actually parenting and having to deal with their child. I see this on a daily basis with some parents. So this has led some parents to just do this instead of trying to parent/grow their child. So the child is then force to regulate themselves by what they see and learn from the tablet/phone.  So everything to them is how they see things online and not in the real world.

The biggest things that I try to impart to my children is that "Actions have Consequences".  I tell them this so they realize early that an action or actions you do or not do will have consequences, so you better plan accordingly. This is something that I do not see a lot of parents doing to their kids now.

Do you have children?

Do they have a civics education, or are they expecting the president to simply write an EO to confiscate all guns?  It seems like the last eight years taught us that the president only needed a pen to make new laws.

there have always been parents that don't parent. this isn't new.

i don't understand why you think you would 'see' other parents parenting unless you live with the family.

i do. my son is 16. and he's a gamer. he's been a gamer since he could pick up a controller.

A person with no concept of the meaning of human life just murdered 17 kids.  It's really that simple.

But isn't it our duty as a society to analyze where it did go wrong? After several shootings we can't call it an individual incident anymore. We have to come to the conclusion that something is wrong within our society.

I think this tragedy proofs again that even with the many, many ,many red flags people are more occupied with their own concerns, instead of paying attention and realizing that this kid needs to be stopped. But the fact that no one ( besides a couple people) did alert the authorities should worry people.

And among those who didn't do anything are adults too, so it's not just "clueless videogames playing" teenagers who simply ignored the warnings.
