I have always been ok with someone that has been adjudicated as Mentally ill not being able to own firearms IF they pose a risk to others. The only issue with that is some states that into account that some of us Vets like myself have PTSD and use that to take someone's guns away. The key word is ADJUDICATED which means actually DIAGNOSED with it.

I do have a real life scenario where my former coworker who has been to Somalia and actually wounded there had a mental breakdown the beginning of January, he had to be brought to a VA Mental Hospital for a couple days because "the skinnies were going to get him and me". So they 6109'd him and took his guns away until he seeks treatment and gets a court order to get them back.

Adjudictated as mentally ill is the key word here, you know? We can all tell pretty obviously that most of the kids and adults that do this have some level of mental depravity or straight up mental issues - but they may never actually receive an official diagnosis as such. Some are 'silent timebombs' and some are obvious to everyone but due to state laws can be very difficult for people to do anything about. Shall we give everyone a mental fitness test to purchase a gun? Don't think that would be a solution people would like very much.

That right there is a big issue. If he had a pattern of doing this then yes he should have been arrested for doing this. That would have initiated a paper trail on him even if it was a misdemeanor.

Well I agree. Just today we had a lockdown because a kid had brought a pellet gun to school He was arrested as far as I'm aware. But this apparently doesn't seem to be the policy some states... and some schools take.

OK but I was looking for a little more from what was acceptable to you on this list:

Like I'm all for everything on the top six of this list. I do not like the idea of teachers carrying guns in schools, shortening waiting periods, . Concealed carry I am actually OK with as long as the individual has got a permit to have one and gone through the necessary training in using the weapon safely and maturely.

Allow Concealed and Unconcealed/Open carry in more places. Since I just moved back to NC I am able to carry unconcealed/open almost anywhere I go but work so I carry almost everywhere. I like the idea of being able to protect my family in case something happens, and no no one can just come up and pull the trigger or pull it out of the holster. It is a special holster to where you can only take it out if press down on a button and pull up, it also covers the trigger so you can just pull it to make it go off.

A number of states like TX and SC are allowing concealed carry without a permit now as long as you are legally allowed to carry that handgun.

From my perspective I know banning all guns isn't going to happen, guns  are far too ingrained in US culture. Having said that though measures can be taken to curb the frequency of these terrible incidents.

Measures.  Such as?

Have a look of the suggestions I posted from the survey, what would you be ok with?

Stop equivocating and deflecting.

What does JIM think would be a good start to lowering the number of criminals who have guns and use them to harm others?

Allow me to ask... have you ever bought a gun, either handgun or rifle?

You spent all last week arguing essentially the opposite, btw.

Amusing that simple solutions are back in vogue.

Confused that it happens so quickly.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

Measures.  Such as?

1. Universal Background Checks.

2. 30 day waiting period in acquiring firearm.

3. Mandatory training in how to safely use and store the weapon. Basically you got to take some sort of firearms course to prove you can responsible.

4. Any history or record of mental illness and domestic violence means restriction.

5. If you carry in public and it must be concealed and you have a licence to do so.

6. Semi-automatic weapons should be off limits. You don't need one to defend your family or hunting.

7. Buying ammunition in bulk amounts should be recorded and monitored.

There are a few.

1. Universal Background Checks. Already being done

2. 30 day waiting period in acquiring firearm.  Not bad, a tad restrictive, but I can live with this.

3. Mandatory training in how to safely use and store the weapon. Basically you got to take some sort of firearms course to prove you can responsible. Another good one, I agree.  As someone who has passed some and is about to take another one soon.

4. Any history or record of mental illness and domestic violence means restriction. Already being done.

5. If you carry in public and it must be concealed and you have a licence to do so. Already being done some places.  Varies by state.

6. Semi-automatic weapons should be off limits. You don't need one to defend your family or hunting. Disagree with this one.  There is no reason why I shouldn’t be able to own one.

7. Buying ammunition in bulk amounts should be recorded and monitored. Meh.  Hard to enforce.  Define bulk?  But overall, I have no issue with it.  Though I can easily get around it by buying in multiple resources.  I know people who have over 30K rounds in their houses, and I doubt they would ever had “pinged” on the radar.

There are a few.

Not too shabby, thanks for the response.

Now that we have a good start on some things that can be done (above those which are already in place)... These work for you and I.  But what about people who buy a gun with the intent to kill humans?  Do you think for a moment they will be hampered by ANY of these proposals?

May have gotten lost in the earlier posts, but I asked you if you have ever bought either a rifle or pistol?

Well for number 1, you forgot about the gun show loop hole so that's not entirely true. Why would you need a semi automatic? Why the need? If you cannot have an automatic weapon due to the ban in 86? and that was OK why isn't a semi automatic?

Glad to see there is some common ground. Do I have a gun? No, I've never desired or felt I ever needed one. I'm more likely to be killed by my own gun in my own home than by somebody's else's.

The gun show loophole is a bit of a myth according to this recent study:

https://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2018/jan/3/most-illegal-attempts-to-buy-guns-online-fail/

Semi-automatic are invaluable defensive tools. Many countries allow semi-automatics and do not have high gun deaths.

I've been and will always be staunchly pro gun. I think with this latest shooting I could see a German law helping the USA. In Germany, if you are under 25 you must go through a mental health check.

^not exactly true can get a license for fully automatic. More requirements but easily obtained but under the ATF.

not to mention one can easily modify semi to be fully automatic if so inclined.

So you want everyone running around with single bolt action rifles or revolvers?
