I'm a U.S. citizen and my husband of 5 months is a NRA.  We are awaiting AoS (applied for in November, 2017).  He received his EAD and applied for and received his social security number "valid for work with DHS authorization."

I am filing taxes electronically as "married filing separately" since he earned income only in Canada last year.  I used my husband's SSN that he just received on the return since it won't allow me to file without it.

The IRS rejected my return stating the SSN of my husband is invalid.  I have to mail the return in instead of efiling it.  Why would his number be rejected?

We also opened a joint bank account and my bank requested a copy of his social security card.  If the card is valid for work, doesn't that imply he can open a bank account and report to the IRS?  Why won't his number work?

I'm going to file by mail and include a copy of his SS card, I guess.  Or is it possible the number is so new in the system that it hasn't fully propogated into governmental databases that the bank, tax software, IRS, etc. use to verify its validity? We are so confused....

Thanks in advance for any insight into your similar experiences!
