Agreed!

We were planning on purchasing one car over the AOS period for my husband (we specifically had 10,000 dollars saved for the down payment) but we didn't expect another driver to run a stop sign and total my car. So then we added a second unplanned car purchase with another 8,000 dollar down payment.

Add this to having a small wedding and the immigration fees (immigration fees were the least expensive thing over the 6 month AOS period). We were lucky my husband had employment the week after the EAD arrived (the timing worked out perfectly with a job offer).

We also spent 18 months both working 2 jobs to save for the AOS prior to his move to the US.

Add health insurance to the mix. Luckily my company has a good insurance plan so I could add him and they cover dental even; but still is monthly cost for me for the health portion, and dental insurance doesn't cover 100% obviously so you still need to pay out of pocket.

Plus, like in your case unexpected expenses.

So don't want OP to think we are discouraging him, but definately need to take a lot of these extra expenses into consideration and plan a head for it because you never know what can happen; but at least can plan accordingly for known expenses outside the immigration part, and it isn't cheap, and again that isn't for fancy stuff, but just general needs.

So true.

I had never been in a car accident before so who would have thought that we would be buying two cars in a months period. Yes, something else to consider as well with healthcare. I have great health insurance through work as well but to cover my husband it still costs me a little money out of my paycheck.

Not to mention my husband had a unplanned heart surgery/procedure 4 works before moving to the US, he was only 33 years old, so things happen for sure. I made sure he was insured ASAP and we also had some cardiology appointments ready for follow-ups ASAP (but these expenses we minimal compared to some of the others I had mentioned) but that was because I health care coverage for my husband ready to go.

Hahaha.. I can can go for days about all the unplanned events during his immigration we are only scratching the surface. Haha

Yes that would work. Find the extra job asap so that by the time you submit the financial evidence you have a solid period of pay stubs from both jobs and can convincingly extrapolate the annual expected income.

Anyone cosponsoring needs to understand their OBLIGATIONS.  They could end up unable to support themself because of sponsoring an immigrant for a family member or friend.

Yes, they should understand it.

That said, they would only be liable for the support at 125% of the poverty level OR to reimburse means-tested benefits obtained. No judge would actually enforce the contract beyond what somebody is capable of paying at that time (i.e. they won't make you choose between supporting the immigrant and putting food on your own table or having a place to live or other necessities).

Well some potential good news: the job market in the Bay Area is really good right now. My wife had a job w/in a month after we moved here. She's nearly doubled her income since then (by changing jobs 7 times in 2 years!).

But yeah, I don't know how you're going to get by on $20K in San Jose. Do you not work full time? Just asking since your income is currently under minimum wage  here (assuming you work FT),

Anyway, unless she's a saint, I don't see how she'll be too happy in your current housing situation. As others have said, your expenses are going to increase significantly.

Best of luck to you both!

And you believe a room will be enough for your spouse as well?

Methinks your wife will drop you like a hot potato as soon as she has her green card in hand.

I second that statement lol

There is a reason the Philippines is on the high fraud list (my opinion, which does not reflect everyone's opinion).

That’ll work. Good luck and nice to see you ignore the relationship advice you never requested.

Top man!

Listen, if your desire is to be with your spouse you will do what it takes legally. You are building a future. Provision in our country is a must. Bear in mind when she arrives she will also contribute. If you are willingly, I would invest some time in myself, such as going to school online, or get another job. This will also help your mind and income. The process does take time. So use it wisely. All the best!
