How big is your household? If it just you? Do you have kids? Because I’m pretty sure you misunderstood the requirements. Take a look here i-864p.pdf?download=1

Its just me

Assuming you don’t have any children under 21, you don’t claim anyone as a dependent and didn’t sponsor anyone in the past your household size would be 2 (you and your wife), therefore the income req would be ~$20k

*and if you dont use a co-sponsor

It does in fact seem that you have misunderstood the requirements. The link shared by @Bzlibem does not load for me, so here it is again just in case: https://www.uscis.gov/i-864p . The requirements for a household of 2 you need an income of $20,300/year (more if you live in Hawaii or Alaska). The 3x you're seeing is if you're using assets instead of income. So let's say you're retired and thus have no real "income", but you do have savings that you're living off of. You're allowed to use these savings in lieu of income as long as you're savings are 3x the income requirement if you're sponsoring your spouse, or 5x if you're sponsoring anyone else. So a retired person would need at least $60,900 in savings to sponsor their spouse.

That said, it appears that you're still $1400 short. No worries, you can find a joint sponsor to overcome that $1400 deficit. The sponsor can be any US citizen or resident domiciled in the US. You can also make up the deficit by combining your income and $1400 x 3 ($4,200) in assets. Assets can be anything that can be converted into cash within a year. The conversion to cash cannot present an undue hardship to the sponsor. So selling off your primary house at a loss is probably a no-go.

Oh ok so if I get a co sponsor income for the difference  I'll be ok?

Not the difference. The joint sponsor would need to earn enough to cover their household + the intending immigrant. You cannot combine incomes from petitioner to joint sponsor.

Actually I'm not 100% sure how combining sponsors works. Someone else might be able to specify whether they can make up the difference or if they are required to fully meet the requirements. Worst case scenario is that you have to find a sponsor for the full amount. Still not too bad, though.

To be honest, surprised even one person can survive on that income in California.

Get a second job to raise your income so you can provide for the immigrant. They don’t live on air alone.

Have a a whole year or more until visa in hand so plenty of time to work on financial requirements.

I also wonder how someone survive in Cali on that much. I pay almost that amount just in rent a lone per year in Houston and cost of living here is a lot cheaper.

*For completeness, the workaround is if you qualify to use an I-864A between the petitioner and other person (but that's not technically using a joint sponsor so the original statement was still correct).
