See the reasoning (within continuation) by the bill's author.  What do we think?

Quote

Bill would allow Iowans to request immigration status of people with criminal records

Brianne Pfannenstiel  |  Published 4:09 p.m. CT Feb. 12, 2018

Iowans convicted of crimes would have their immigration status made public under a bill advanced in the Iowa House of Representatives on Monday.

"I believe citizens have a right to know who’s committing crimes," said Rep. Steven Holt, R-Denison. "And why in the world we would think that the state should have a right to keep as a secret someone’s immigration status from a community where a crime has been committed borderlines on the ridiculous to me."

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

I don't quite understand the comments made relative to domestic violence.  If someone is being beaten or harassed by someone in their family, wouldn't the immigration status be known already?

Otherwise, not really sure what benefit this type of bill would be for the general public except as political fodder for someone.

in a sense, this already happens in my neck of the woods. how it works is, a hispanic looking individual commits a crime and gets their picture in the paper. then all the internet comments follow up with 'go back where you came from' 'deport them, they'll just come right back'. i'm not really sure what knowing a persons immigration status accomplishes. will torches and rope be handed out with each big reveal?

Along the lines of punishing addresses of known sex offenders.  Bad might outweigh good.

Or, to use a comparison that was used in another thread, posting the addresses of folks that own guns.

i think publishing the addresses of known sex offenders is imperative to public safety. i disagree with some of the charges that can land a person on that list, and i think including those offenders in with child molesters/rapists/predators (a person can get put on the sex offender list for peeing in public, for example) takes away from the lists' usefullness.

if the general public knows that a person is illegal, what does that accomplish? be aware of this illegal person because they're a threat to you and your children? i know it's all the rage to report every single criminal act committed by an illegal, but that fad is just to bolster xenophobic tendencies a fearful public will default to when being brainwashed by 'we're being invaded' propaganda.

yee haw.

In the news paper.  Google is your friend.  I should qualify that to say permit holders, not sure everyone that has a permit actually owns a gun.

Gun permits are public records, so I imagine anyone can file a FOIA to get them.  Not sure if immigration records are similar.

we've gone from gun owners to permit holders. and like you said, one doesn't necessarily equate with the other. there is no public list of gun owners, and i don't see where such a list would be a negative thing. it's not like the public is going to hunt gun owners down and harass them. can't say i expect the same non involvement from the public if illegal immigrant info was public.

Maybe we should publish a list of people who keep coin collections in their home.

Agree . The list is too broad. An 18 year old guilty of nothing but consent sex with a 17 year old should not be on list
