I have never been in the Philippines during the Valentine's Day period. Is it commercial like in the USA? Do men give wives / girlfriends / significant others candy, cards , chocolate and Flowers? What do the women normally give the men in their lives ? Those living in the USA have your wives freely embraced the Valentine's Day fervor as we practice here. Just curious on this one.

I dated a girl name Val form the Philippines, and she was born on Valentines Day.

The OP is not wondering , but, just asking a question. I honestly did not know about how , or, if the day is a holiday observed in Phil. You gents don't have to be condescending , or, put a spin on a basic question. I already have what the gifts to give , whether they woo or not is immaterial , my gift is in the giving and that is what matters.

I was just stating a point not trying to be condescending to you at all. I am sorry you felt like it was condescending.  Filipinas are very romantic to say the least and want to be wooed.

I bought roses and a stuffed animal for my then fiance when I was in the Philippines when we were in the city and not out in the province. You should have seen how the other women gushed over what I got her and wished they had a guy do that for them. Yes, I understand enough Bisaya to know what's being said most of the time.

Do they celebrate women's day (March 8th) there? This day is a bigger deal than Valentine's Day for my wife.

What is that?

LOL, I'm guessing you don't know what International Men's day (November 19)?

Women's Day is the following to my wife and I (see bold/underline, as we don't deal with the political side of the issue). In her country it's a national holiday.

International Women’s Day (IWD), originally called International Working Women’s Day, is marked on March 8 every year. In different regions the focus of the celebrations ranges from general celebration of respect, appreciation and love towards women to a celebration for women’s economic, political and social achievements. Started as a Socialist political event, the holiday blended in the culture of many countries, primarily Eastern Europe, Russia, and the former Soviet bloc. In many regions, the day lost its political flavour, and became simply an occasion for men to express their love for women in a way somewhat similar to a mixture of Mother’s Day and St Valentine’s Day. In other regions, however, the original political and human rights theme designated by the United Nations runs strong, and political and social awareness of the struggles of women worldwide are brought out and examined in a hopeful manner.

Had no clue about an International Mens Day. I take it that International Women's Day gets more press and push. The same emphasis on Mothers Day over Fathers Day when they both should have an equal coverage. Thanks to all hope all is well .

I was going to ask how everything went yesterday but I didn't want to be rude, and again I apologize for coming off as condescending. My Valentines day went ok we didn't go out and do anything special because my wife is sick(Tonsillitis) so just wanted me to get a couple of pizzas for us and the kids. Of course I had already paid for flowers that were delivered during the day, and while I was waiting for the pizzas I went and got a balloon and some chocolate. So overall she was satisfied and that's what counts overall.

We did have a good laugh later on that night because of our 1 year old daughter. She loves balloons and loves playing with them while walking around. So around 8:30 when the other kids had gone to bed and it was just me, my wife, and our baby in the living room. She kept going in to the kitchen and coming back to the living room with her arm out making noises like "come here I want to show you something". So I go in there with her and she runs up to the table where the balloon is and points up like "can I have the balloon please?". So I give her the balloon and she is happier than pig in mud, all the while my wife is laughing because of what my baby did.

True Hank all women do appreciate that love and care. Be it Shanghai or Chicago, Manila or Miami, they all love special attention.  We guys also like the occasional gift or surprise.

thanks for the info, but pls cite me an example of the "occasional gift"  :D I received a card with a lottery ticket in it (not a winner tho) from my husband (no flowers because I prefer seeds or a live plants, so I can buy that myself) but I did not give him any.. I was struggling to decide, so I decided to just cook him menudo (he loves it) but I want to give him something special because February is his birth month too.. but it is really difficult to please a man with gifts.. so I need ideas here :jest:

I'm late chiming in. As others said Filipino's tend to be romantics, so yes Valentines Day is special and observed. I was only there one time during Valentines Day. We stayed at a hotel and I had a dozen red roses and a box of chocolates in our room waiting on the bed when we checked in. I arranged that with the staff. She always appreciates flowers on other times I was not there. This Valentines I sent her a very heart felt love letter.
