This decision in one county in Iowa is apparently becoming more prevalent.  What do we think about sacrificing transparency in favor of guarding personal information?

All law enforcement radio traffic will be encrypted, effectively going silent to the public, on March 13 throughout Johnson County. 

In a Thursday news release from the Joint Emergency Communications Center for Johnson County, Tom Jones, executive director of JECC, said all law enforcement will be switched to encrypted communications, meaning "the public will no longer be able to monitor most law enforcement scanner traffic."

This means that all police scanners used by anyone besides the law enforcement agencies in Johnson County will be mostly silent by March. 

Encryption of all police radio traffic was approved by the Joint Emergency Communications Services Association Policy Board in September 2017. 

Jones said in an email that there will be a blotter available on JECC's website for calls to police, but that all information will be delayed four hours for "scene safety."

Overall, not sure about this.  I went through a phase at one time when I used to listen to a police scanner, but that has since passed.  I am sure at some point radio folks will come out with the means to listen in for those that want.

Been using it for years.  Of course you are somewhat reliant on someone else seeing the police first, but oftentimes they are marked properly.
