How can I check if my social security number is valid and associated with my records?

 Hi everyone!

Here is my situation: I applied for my EAD card all the way back in November 2017. USCIS is still reviewing my application. I got a job offer 3 weeks ago and my employer's HR is trying to run a background check on me which requires a social security number. I got really impatient with USCIS and decided to go to a local social security office and issue a social security card. The agent at the office told me when USCIS sends you a social security card along with your EAD card, just contact us and we will destroy it and you can keep using the one we issued for you today.

I just got my card today by mail and I want to check if it is valid and associated with my records (such as SEVIS). I tried to test my new social security number by creating mySocialSecuirty account and the system's response "We cannot create an account for the Social Security number you entered". I also tried to use my social security number in E-verify (checking my employment eligibility) and the system fails to associate my new number with my name.

Can someone help me? Is this normal? I really want to make sure my social security number is valid before I use it for background check. Thank you so much!

If you were issued a card it’s valid from when it was issued. However, that’s not gonna do you any good because you can’t work until you received EAD. Getting a job offer is great but they won’t even process your application at your job until you have EAD in hand. Best you can do is get your future employer to put your offer on official paper and submit that to USCIS in hopes they can expedite your EAD

My thinking was by doing the background check and allowing HR to complete other paperwork, I can buy myself time until hopefully USCIS approve my application. I tried to talk to USCIS about expediting my application, and they said I need to proof of severe financial loss. I tried to ask them to define what is considered severe and they were not able to answer my question. If someone is reading this and have something valuable to say, please comment here and inform me! I'm so desperate and frustrated :(

If you have official job offer with company's letterhead and signature, etc. You can request to expedite your case in financial loss to company/person category, because if you do not have your card, you will lose your offer, and it will cause you severe financial loss. It can be expedited or not, you will never know, but you can request if you have a job offer.

i understand you said in your ead application that you want an ssn to be issued to you. by jumping ahead and going to the ssa to get the number yourself, i hope you did not just just inadvertently delay the approval of your ead! i'm worried that when USCIS gets to your ead adjudication they see the ssn and get confused so they keep your ead on hold while they double check with ssa. worse, what if you get issued a second ssn (one in your married name). i assume the one you have is in your maiden name still. i hope it all works out and there will be no delays or issues for you though. best of luck!

This sounds like something I can do. Can you please brief me on how to request USCIS to expedite my application? Who do I talk to and who do I send my official job offer to? Thank you!

Hi there. Your comment is troubling and increases my anxiety :( . Are you speaking from your own experience, or from working as employer at USCIS or just speculating?

First, you must reach customer service representative and request to expedite. They will tell expedite criteria categories, and option applicable is financial loss to company/person. You will summarize your situation, then representative will repeat that. After your approval, he/she will give a referral number(also you can see in online case status, next steps coloumn if you have an account). Then, you will just wait for response. They told me that i will get a response in five days. At the same time, i wrote my situation to my congressman as well. I requested on 8th, i am waiting for response. Hope that helps😊

Oh wow you are not joking around. Your congressman? haha I might do that too. Thank you for your reply! its so helpful. But the process you just described did not involve providing USCIS with an official job offer document. You just talked with them over the phone. At what point do I need to provide them with job offer document?

No worries! You raise some good points and I welcome healthy level of anxiety over something that is real. I read somewhere that when they approve your application, they produce and mail your EAD card, and refer your application to the social security office to issue you a social security card. This is not proven fact though, just a random comment I read somewhere.

When you respond you in five days, they will probably request to fax your job offer. They will give you a fax number.

First, I did the same thing.. went ahead and visisted my SSN office and received an updated SSN card.. and I am worried that it may slow down things with USCIS since I checked the "yes I want a new SSN card" in my form. But that is a risk I decided to take because I needed some proof of name change at the moment.

Second, I believe the mysocialsecurity account is not available for restricted SSNs.. once you get your green card and you become unrestricted, you will be able to create one of those accounts.. so you will need to find another way to verify what you need.

I've never tried the E-verify myself but one of my past employers did use it when I was in the US as a student, and they told me they had issues too.. I dont know how they were able to verify, but they did.  I even got an email telling me that someone was checking my employment eligibility..

Good luck!

Thank you for taking the time to comment here! It is really comforting to know another person shares my impatience quality haha. Did you receive your EAD card yet? Can you share your timeline here if you don't mind? I have to deal with Potomac Center and they received my app in November.

haha, funny!

No EAD for me yet..  You can see my timeline if you click on the word timeline that shows up on the left of this post (is the last info/option under my country flag)

you should also fill out yours.. it helps visajourney create estimates on when everyone's EADs, approvals, etc will be processed.
