Changing my last name

Hey Everyone!

I got me green card a few months ago (The conditional 2 year one) and was wondering if it's now safe to change my last name. I wasn't sure if I need to send USCIS paperwork telling them OR if I go in to my next interview in a year and a half, should I just bring the documents for them then?

Any advice is much appreciated! Thank you <3

?!? Why wasn’t it ‘safe’ to use your married name before? If you wanted to use your married name and not your maiden name why didn’t you put that on your green card application?

If you want to change your name now you have to apply and pay the fee, totally not worth it as you will still have to apply for removal of conditions in two years.

You might as well wait until removing of conditions but this means that you won’t have green card with your married name until you do and so might not be able to have other ID changed.

Wait until became US citizens and you can get name change for free. Getting name change right now is costly and took a long time.

Not necessarily needed if only change last name from maiden to married it can be done with marriage certificate at removal of conditions.

Could you not change your name when you went to get married?

In any event, you might as well wait to change it until you get to the ROC stage, it would cost too much to do now, and this green card is only for 2 years, so surely you can hold out until then.

~~Moved to General Immigration, from K1 P&P - The OP is looking at changing to her married name.~~

Mod hat off

You can start using your married name now. Social Security might let you change your card to married if they do then you might be able to change it for your DL. I say might because when they run the your name check it may not connect you. But I would try anyway.

Personally I also would not do it at Citizenship because that is a completely different type of name change. Using your married name does not make it permanent or change your birth certificate. A court order name change which is what you would do if you wanted USC and changed it then. That changes your name even what shows on your BC and is permanent. So if the worse happened and you got a divorce you could not just resume your maiden name.
