My Husband’s interview is approaching, and I have not filed my 2017 taxes yet, which I feel they will ask for at the embassy interview.  We have prepared to apply for an ITIN number, but I am concerned that it will take too long and he will have to wait until the IRS finishing processing my taxes. For people who are filing taxes and have a spousal visa interview soon, what status did you file under? Also, when he goes for the interview, would a copy of the tax forms I file be sufficient.  I’m afraid by the time of the interview that I will have only mailed the tax return, but had no correspondence from the IRS.  Also, this will be my first time to not file electronically, so I really am confused on what to expect.  I would be grateful for any advice or experience in this matter.

You will have a copy of the 2017 form that you submitted or will submit, correct?  You don't need to wait for the IRS to complete processing of your return.

You will also submit the Affidavit to NVC first not to the Embassy

YMMV

I agree with payxibkaI just mailed my tax an application for the W7 ITIN number to texas yesterday, since the only way that you can apply for a ITIN now is to submit it with your paperwork down to Texas, I had to send down my husbands Egyptian passport as well, I am leaving to go back to Egypt in April and I have my fingers crossed that it will get back before I leave to go back for him to have for his interview.

Anyway I took a copy of what I mailed, you do not need to wait for them to process it, you have what was filed you will be fine, just make sure that you have other tax returns as well to show.

I believe the ITIN and the tax return can take about 8 weeks to process.

Thank you for the responses.  Yes, I can send my husband a copy of everything that was filed with the IRS, and I was hoping that would suffice.  I submitted the AOS and he will have a copy for the interview, and he will have the 2017 w2, so hopefully with a copy of everything I mail, I’m thinking that it will be okay.  I actually was considering filing married filling separately, but that still requires a written filing.  MFJ is giving me a couple thousand off my tax bill, so I wanted to pursue that, but I just didn’t want to cause any unnecessary delay.  Thanks again for the advice.
