Hello VJ'ers,

I'm a British person in California going through the AOS process ( work visa to spousal green card) and my Cali driver's licence is expiring tomorrow.

I have yet to get my EAD so there's nothing I can really take to the DMV yet other than the I-797 ... which is any status really.

Can I still drive about on my UK licence ??

In Cali illegal aliens can get driver's licenses so, would think you'd be okay.

I got my DL extended for 8 months with just I-797. I think it depends on your State and DMV. I live in NC. I think it is worth a shot. Also on DMV website it should state if I-797 is accepted or not.

Oh, that's hopeful! Thank you, I'll go in and ask them.

UPDATE: for anyone else in the same situation.

Went to the DMV (I'm in California) and did the usual wait in line for 2 hours torture...

The answer I got was they won't accept any I-797s or any other docs until they have my green card or EAD.

When I asked if I could still drive on my UK licence the lady behind the desk said, "Yes, just pretend you're on holiday if you get pulled over"
