I agree that they should put the bill forward and let the Dems vote against it if that us what you mean.

Are we talking about immigration or the budget?

There is a very strong likelihood that "compromise" could be found and an immigration bill passed through the House. The problem is, it wouldn't involve a "Majority of the Majority Party", and so Ryan won't allow it. Pretty much the antithesis of compromise.

You allow that vote to come to the House, you'll get the votes for the budget. Pretty simple.

Two separate issues: pass the budget then can pass immigration reforms.

no need to mix the two.

I believe the end of the last shutdown involved an agreement to bring a vote on immigration.

A majority in power right now needs some of the minority to be able to pass a budget. The minority have chosen to make immigration reform their issue. It's up to the majority power to compromise in order to get the votes they need.

Ultimately the people in power are responsible for the decisions that are made.

Wasn't it "budget passage in January to end the shutdown" and then immigration?

They did pass a budget a temporary budget in January, as per the agreement.

No it was agreed that the perm budget would not be held hostage by DACA. That is why the Schumer shutdown failed miserably and they caved.

"The Senate voted 81-18 to move forward on a bill to fund the government through Feb. 8 after Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) agreed to end the shutdown and continue to negotiate on immigration and spending matters. If a broader deal is not reached by Feb. 8, the Senate would take up legislation to protect hundreds of thousands of young undocumented immigrants who are losing legal protections, as long as the government remains open."

So if a broader deal isn't reached by today, in order to keep the government open the Senate needs to take up legislation to protect the "Dreamers".

So I guess if Paul Ryan doesn't move things forward, the Senate has an obligation to do so. It's reasonable to wait to make sure that obligation will be followed through on before reaching an agreement.

As I said - As long as I can get on my flight tomorrow I'll peace out and look for a resolution in three weeks time.

I am not sure I follow you. My understanding is that if a budget deal is passed and the gov remains open....then they will take up the immigration legislation.

I admit I think the way news reported it was somewhat misleading, so I actually think there are two interpretations.

The way I had initially read it was:

They agreed to reopen the gov in January (which happened). In return, they promised to negotiate on immigration. If a deal wasn't reached by February 8th (today, and a deal hasn't been reached yet), then the Senate needs to take up legislation on immigration, in agreement for continuing to keep the government open.

As I said though I think it was probably intentionally vague, for the benefit of the Republicans so they didn't have to follow through on immigration. In my mind at this point since the House has been unable to come up with an agreement, the Senate is now agreeing to do so. I'd expect to see that ALONG WITH keeping the government open. Not "passing the buck" another time.

And if you are correct then that’s why they have been working on a perm budget deal instead of immigration. :jest:

Exactly . They dont have the numbers in the house and I doubt they have 60 in the senate so dead on arrival . Let them sink slowly for the whole country to watch and then put the 2 year budget bill on the table . The alt left will cry and say we want DACA still but they will be in such a weak spot they will loose in the polls badly .

Especially with major dem priorities in this bill and crying schumer loving this deal . I dont think pelosi has the authority over her people . And dozens of swing state dems will vote yes.

what trump wants trump gets :)

It was Sen Durbin and his gang that came into Trumps office asking not only for Dreamer protection (path to citizenship) actually and only  a billion or so for border security AND allow parents to get lifelong EAD/AP AND relocate green cards from lottery to the TPS people . So now you tell me who is overcomplicating things. I thought dems want #cleandreamact , sure as hell doesent sound clean to me . Sounds shady and twisted . Whats up with TEMPORARY protected people now included to get green cards . Thats why Trump declined and thats why it came to a shutdown . Simple

The wall works guys dont let anyone tell you otherwise . Everywhere where there was no wall and they built one, ( San Diego , El Paso , Yuma ) apprehensions came way down and so did the drug violence. I couldnt care less about some Democrat from new york telling ME , 80 miles from the border what works and what doesent . So ignorant and naive . Numbers proof it all. PM for links. Dont want to hijack this thread.

So funny when Dems have voted time and time again to BUILD a wall in large numbers and now they pretend like it never happened because the alt left squeezes them so hard
